Alright, I am slightly bored (waiting for my daughter to fall asleep, earplugs...in!).
Here is my growing list of Very Cool Cars That Even James Could Possibly Own One Day But Probably Could Never Afford To Fix If Anything Went Wrong--
1989 Maserati 228i, 2730lbs 250hp 2.8L V6 twin turbo, 5spd, LSD. Saw one at Ecology. There is one on eBay right now. Very Cool. B-Stock.
1986-87 Mercedes Benz 190E 2.30-16. 2700lbs, 180-ish hp, Cosworth-built engine, 5spd, LSD, many cool bits. My stepmom had one. Very Cool. A G-Stock car :)
Isuzu Impluse RS. AWD Turbo, a G-Stock car. Good luck finding one.
1981 Porsche 924 Turbo (931). I had one a few years ago, 2.0L Audio engine, about 2500lbs, won a lot of PCA autocrosses. "Cheater" PCA G-Prepared/GP car. Makes crazy horsepower, enough to destroy transmissions with Kumho V710's. I likey. E-Stock car, but with only 15x6" wheels. M471 package is the way to go.
Porsche 968 M030 Package. Decent B-Stock car, good brakes/wheels, all adjustable suspension. Would make a great PCA and trackday car. Still can be found for just north of $10K if you look hard.
Porsche 928 GTS. 300+hp, aluminum body panels, double wishbone, 5spd/LSD, not a great autocrosser but very cool road car and trackday monster if you can afford to take care of it. The automatic versions were not slow.
1989 Mazda RX-7 GTUs. Less than 1,000 built but inside sources at Mazda mention less than 200. Aluminum hood, different transmission ratios/final drive and VLSD, high-compression 13B rotary engine, no sunroof/options. I owned one last year, ran it in STS2, won the SD National Tour and the Cal Speedway ProSolo...awesome car, mine had wiring issues that made it run poorly. I would pick up another one in a heartbeat, but for E-Stock......2600lbs 16x7" wheels huge brakes, great balance, rotaries make power with exhaust systems.
1991 Lotus Elan. I have seen a few, some aftermarket turbo (factory turbo available?), but FWD. Nice Tiny little car with an Isuzu/Lotus joint engine. They go for cheap, like less than $10K...crazy for a "newer" Lotus. And, they have way more head/legroom than an Esprit.
1982 Porsche 944 M030 with 15x8" rear wheels. This car does not exist in Nature, but somehow Jodi Fordahl has one and noone has protested her :) The "perfect" naturally-aspirated Porsche 944. All adjustable coilover suspension and adjustable rear sway bar, LSD, hardtop, blah blah no way you're going to find one unless you "make one". I miss my '87 924S, great balance...I get to drive it every once and a while at local PCA autocrosses.
Toyota Celica AllTrac- turbo AWD. A buddy of mine has one, RandyC's daughter used to have one, one on CraigsList right now. Rare, but a neat idea. Once the turbo and associated lines and plumbing are replaced, they can even be reliable. Heavy, probably not for autocrossing. RallyX Car?
Mitsubishi Gallant VR4. George Doganis had one, now Bret Norgaard owns it. Underpinnings of an early Evolution with AWD turbo, limited production number. Sleeper.
Mazda 323GTX. Like above, limited number and AWD turbo. Cons-- low hp (~130), transmission can be fragile and rare. Upside-- Mazda 1.6L ala Miata and several Kia models. I had the opportunity to buy one about 8 years ago, had no idea what it was, so I passed, stupid :)
Feel free to add to this rambling list, keep it realistic and under $15K.
