Unless something extraordinary happens, championships are open to day of registration. You'll need to purchase a local SDR card as well.

Why is that? The "practices" seem to fill so quickly.

Practices are usually limited to 80 - 100 entries because they're trying to get 10+ runs each. Championships usually allow for over 200 entries because you only get 3 - 4 runs and then there are fun runs at the end.

You should do the TART event, don't be put off by "Championship Event". There is lot's of help for beginners at a champ, perhaps even more so than a practice.
