The SCCA National Tour will take place at Qualcomm Stadium West Lot.

The Tour is a two day event that attracts the best drivers from all over the western USA and from even as far as Florida. You can expect serious competition and a great experience.

Dates are Saturday March 4th and Sunday March 5th. Friday March 3rd is also a part of the Tour experience as the region will be doing setup, registration, tech inspection on Friday. And on Friday we normally run a small practice course starting in the morning.

Local region clubs will have certain responsibiltiies and various region members will also be tasked with various duties, such as setting up the grid, tech, getting refreshments, lunches, etc. More info to follow on that.

The event Chairman is our own Mark Duerst who has done a great job already.

Costs for attending a Tour are a bit more than a local event. Preregistration with SCCA is required and you have to be an SCCA member to compete.

The tour format is you run 3 runs on Saturday and then 3 runs on Sunday (course reveresed and tweaked). Your best Saturday time and your best Sunday time are added together to determine trophy positions.

I will get a flyer out soon for you. Had to get the okay first for this idea.
Would like to get some other vendors there as well. Let me know some names!
We have to draw the line at not featuring only tires and wheels since tirerack is sponser.

Looking for someone to head up raffle position to benefit injured person from Arizona incident. We will be placing a donation bucket by water/soda area to further help in this cause.

www.SCCA.com, click on the "Solo" section, then National Tour, then San Diego event...I would post the direct link, but then you wouldn't learn anything :-) PreRegistration online is the way to go, otherwise the fees go up. Entry lists are also posted online.

Required stickers are available for free and/or a nominal fee at tech for the event.

The usual requirements are:
(3) SCCA Solo II Sticker-right, left and front (you have to buy those, they are available at the event, $1 each?)
(2) 2006 National Tour sticker- right and left (free at the event)
(1) TireRack windshield sticker-top of the windshield (free at the event)
Plus any required National Tour sponsor stickers (free at event)

Tech will run from 12 - 7 pm Fri, Sat 7 -8 am
Daryled Bristol will be doing tech before then for the mini tour.

The mini tour starts at 10:00 am
Mike will post details here soon as to how it is being run.

Registration is from 5 - 7 pm Fri, Sat 7 - 8 am
You need a rule book (they will be sold at event $20.00).

Friday social is from 5 - 7 pm.
Beverages and a DJ! :D
Course will be open for walking around 2:00pm (pending final approval)
Lights are on Fri / Sat till 8:00 pm.

T shirts will be sold in vendor row. C2 Motorsports and Dave Turner Motorsports will also be present. The lunch wagon should be there most of the day Sat / Sun.

One important change from typical local event operations: after stopping for a downed cone / cone out of box / course worker etc. or something that gives you a rerun, proceed slowly (approximatley 15 mph) to the finish line and then your grid space. This is only for national events and is meant to have a uniform policy regarding how to handle this situation. If you want to debate it don't do it here - email Cindy.

If you tech for the mini-tour once the "official" tech is open, then only need to tech once for the weekend. With the popularity of the mini-tour we are providing additional hours, so needed to figure out a way to ensure cars could be teched for the earlier hours of that "event."

1.)Is this event pretty competitive?
2.)Would it be pointless if I (a novice) entered the event?
1.) Only one event in the nation is more competitive.
2.) Yeah probably. It doesn't hurt to be slow, but as a novice you probably wouldn't learn anything from a national event.

Jay W

kevin_stevens

I think it depends on how "novice" you are. If it's your first or second event, yes, things will seem a bit overwhelming - you might just want to show up and watch. But if you've got enough events under your belt to have numbers, be comfortable working course, etc. - it's a good learning experience.

I guess put it this way - if you're running competitively with your class - say within three seconds or so - you'll fit in fine and nobody will even notice you're there, except to be happy if your entry adds another trophy position to the class. If you're ten seconds off the pace or still getting lost on course occasionally - you'll feel a lot of pressure not to "screw up".

KeS

(Of course, this is coming from someone who was 5 seconds behind the class last Sunday, and once won a NT after DNFing the course twice on Sunday - so take with two grains of salt!)

Roostie
02-21-2006, 12:22 AM
I totally agree with what Kevin says about a novice running the Tour.

Another thing to keep in mind for your first Tour is that SCCA National events are not run like local SCCA events. At my first tour my co-driver and I got DSQ'd for failing to go to impound after our runs. I was unaware of the impound requirement. Our placing in the class was low enough we didn't particularly care, and IIRC we enjoyed the event.

If you can read the cones, just do it! I ran last year and the only thing I had done before was a pro-solo in Feb. I ran SS and had my A$$ handed to me. It was a good learning experience. Don’t be intimidated by the competitors, ask questions. All that I spoke to seemed very helpful. Also lots of SDR people there to help.
Get the seat time. If you finish last who cares, 2nd is the 1st loser anyway!

I agree, I DFL's my first tour (street tires - not that it would have mattered).

I had a GREAT time, 99% of the guys are super nice. Course is usually easier to follow than some clubs courses. Just be alert for the national only rules like the required stickers (I had one missing on my 1st tour - almost dsq'd me about 5 min. b4 I was to run, don't go for a low number - they run in order - unless you dig being the first car on course, and the impound period.

My second tour I picked up a screw & was going flat after my first run. Guys pitched in with a plug, Bob Dees did the "surgery", I had air & got out for run # 2 without even asking for a mechanical delay.

The "energy" level is noticably higher at a tour, everyone wanting to do their best, be part of it.

Our courses are SCCA approved before we run them, so hopefully nothing. But we'll have to wait and see.

Word on the street is the protest about course speeds was more to force the hand of SCCA to give some less ambigous language about speeds, nobody expected the protest committee to uphold the protest. Now it goes to appeals and will probably get overturned.

Smaller number of entrants and more of a dedication to the sport. Most people that do ProSolos, travel to 2 or 3 events, or even more.

Back in the day, it was more competitive because it paid out more money for how well you did. That is much less true now though.

There's an interesting article in today's SD Tribune about the "National Autocross" this weekend. Bill Center didn't quite get all the facts correct, but at least it was mentioned...

So I can Tech before 5pm on Friday, and that is good for the whole weekend? Then register after 5? I did pre-register if that makes a difference.
Thanks,
Karl

Yes, tech before 5:00pm Friday. Good for all weekend. What you did was not pre-register as much as pre-enter. You will have to register at the event and show the current SCCA card, Driver's license, and SCCA Rulebook.

I did some fast editing because the formatting was odd. I probably chopped off ESP.

I see it now. Was listed as "ES(space)P" didn't catch it by eye, then the search doesn't find it that way either.

Oh yeah, I see the spaces. Formatting issue from SCCA's site.

Usually things start earlier on Sunday ... is 9 am taking that into account? No drivers meeting ... and they need time for the award ceremony.

So, did the run groups finish before the sun went down? I know they were running late when I stopped by to say "hi" to those away people I only see once or twice a year.

Yes, we ran our last runs just before dusk.. plenty of light left, but we were looking at the setting sun in some turns. On our last run, it was getting darker so we were debating sunglasses, since it was getting too dark, but once you were facing the sun....
