For those that have not heard, there was a freak incident involving an out-of-control car at the finish and it hit the timing trailer. One person was seriously injured. This was the first major incident like this in 30 years in Arizona.

Please consider donating a little bit to help the guy out. I did. Thanks.

P.S. Probably not a bad thing also to remind us that safety is a priority and we need to all work on keeping our events safe.

Gah! This makes my twice nearly run-over for two events participated in look like nothing. He'll be in my prayers...

Is there any sort of floating theory of what went wrong yet?

Not that it would have helped in that horrible accident, but I would like to see corner/track workers in orange safety vests.

Not orange. Orange is cone colored.

I keep forgetting to post this, but the class today reminded me.

For the Chicago Region (where I first autox'ed), if you hit a cone after crossing the finish it is a DNF. They gave the driver much more room after crossing the finish line than I've seen here (enough room for people to spin out and still not hit cones).

Why does the Chicago Region feel this is needed? Doesn't jibe with the National rules.

Serveral Regions do this DNF for hittings cones after the finish in hope to stop drivers from the "spin and win" finish.

So make the cones count like they do here?

I don't know the exact reasons. Maybe they got tired of people gunning it after crossing the finish line like it would improve their time. I only took a novice class with them, and maybe the rule was just for the novice class (now that I think about it).

I can see that as a disincentive to hotdogging it at the end.
