View Full Version : Time to start teaming up (SCNAX Cup 5!)

(Note this is a CalClub {LA region} solo2 event.)
That's right, its that time of year again. SCNAX Cup 5 is right around the corner scheduled for Oct 21st and 22nd at California Speedway.
For those that don't know, the SCNAX Cup is officially a 2day practice that we underlay with a unique team competition. Teams of four drivers with 4 different cars compete over the 2 days. Each driver takes 6 runs in each car, and the fastest 3 of runs each driver/car combo are scored. To add to the competitiveness of the event we include a 'driver's handicap index', which works like a golf handicap base on each driver's performance at the last three solo events. So everyone starts on even ground.
A flyer and entry information should be up in a week or two to the solo2.com site. Priority registration will be given to SCNAX Cup participants, with the remainder spots going to regular practice spots.
SCNAX Cup rules listings and discussions typically take place on the SCNAX forum at
http://www.scnax.com/forums
Its time to start talking with your buddies and setting up your teams. Don't forget the creative names!

or have only run in the novice class? On the solo2 forums, you guys were debating about having 5 instead if 3 champ events under your belt. So will the SD event on the 7th be counted?
Frosty, do you need a team? I know a guy in LA with an S2000 that I co-drive with and that would make three out of four guys.....and my civic is the fastest in the west.....

Doesn't matter, any class counts since your handicap is based on you and your car vs top paxer and his/her car.
Oct 7th (and Oct 15th in LA) will only count if a driver needs a third event. Its too hard to count events so close to the cup, so we only do it for those special cases.

Although I have never driven an AWD car before, people say it's kind of like driving a FWD car, and to just drive flat out, which i do anyway; but yours looks like a nice ride.
Have you ever driven an exotic like my civic before? I'll be at the 7th event, and I'll try and think of a few team names. Got a person in mind for anyone with the existing car platforms needed? I just hope my car withstands 18 runs:D

I've driven some ... interesting hondas in my few years. Not quite like this, but I think I can manage something. :D We can discuss how you'd like my tire pressures setup on the AWD. There's "floor it and it won't spin out on you", but it understeers, and there's "if you get more boost than you are expecting, hold on to something cause the trunk is coming around."

I was just wondering how each team could find a mid-engined car, and then I remembered that there are a few Elises running. And then i remembered that there are a few MR2s out there as well. But it doesn't matter now I know the rules. Unless, you want to drive a civic with such formula one derived technology as 16V per cylinder (cossie DFV I believe :) ), and (insert :D comment here)....

You can have 3 identical cars and one "outcast". The point is to have the drivers have to deal with something significantly different from their own vehicle. It's fun. :) MR and FR cars both count as RWD for the Cup.
Or you can have 4 cars with completely different persontalities. Less chance of winning, greater chance of fun. Last year's team that Jayson refers to had his Dakota, my G35, Nik's MR2, and Warren's Matrix. Three RWD and an FWD.
The mid-engine cars are fun, but very very different. I spun the MR2 5 times in 4 runs because it's instinct for me to lift. When looking for an MR car, don't forget ye olde Fiero.

Futhermore, I know there's a couple people still looking for teams.
One is Ed Taylor, a San Diego driver who runs an IS3 (inbetween DS and DSP) '86 Celica (RWD). Note that Ed would qualify for BBART (ask Ekstrand, Curt or Glenn). Ed's not a message board guy, but I have his e-mail and phone number if someone wants to get ahold of him.
A second is Ryan ODonohue. I don't know much about Ryan, but saw he is registered (and I assume contactable) on the LA board. He is fairly new and drives an S2000.

Okay, I've incoperated a bunch of updates. Team Spin is the only real slackers.
I also need to know if anyone qualifies for the extra ST index. This index will apply if you ran on R-comps for your qualifing events and want to go to ST tires for the cup.
The data file is posted here (excel file).
http://jaycomservices.com/Event_Management/scnax_cup/scnaxcup2006.xls
The "N/A"s pop up because of missing data. The "Driver PAX" and "Template" sheets are the only thing of concern.
If you see an error, let me know ASAP. woodrufj@yahoo.com
We're still looking to fill out some teams. Vixen is looking for two, preferably ladies at least one non-FWD. LugNuts is looking for one, non-RWD.

Damn, my driver PAX blows... at least our team has the lowest overall. Looks like we got a good chance! ;)
I have a question about the ST index. Is it per driver or per car? It seems like we should be able to do it per car, since everyone on the team has to drive it. If it's per car, I don't see why it matters what we ran on for qualifying events.
For example, Chris will run his HS car on street tires. Seems like we should all get an ST index for our times in his car...
Thanks for all the work you put into this Jay!
woodrufj
10-19-2006, 11:34 AM
Its per car.
Its not an exact science how the indexes get applied per run, but it should all wash out in the over all scores. In Chris' case, his person hanidcap index effectivally has an ST index already added in because his PHI is weaker as a result of qualifying on ST tires in a R-comp class. That means any of you guys driving his car are going to be biased slow, but he'll be biased high driving other well preped cars. In the over all team score it washed out.
Same thing happens when a good driver owns a bad car. Few years back I kicked ass in the individual category because my PHI was based on driving the truck in ESP, but I got to drive three other well preped cars.
Jason, I'm impressed by your understanding of the rules, especially for your first Cup. Many guys have been doing this 3 or 4 years and still don't get the simple stuff.

My car will be on yokohamas that aren't quite street tires, but aren't quite an autocross R compound (A048). Treadwear is 60 and they're a fair bit stickier than the AD07's. I suppose we could play on the hoosiers if someone can transport them...

I thought the competition between teammates was the most fun. We had some close battles in all of the cars, and Chris nearly got me in my own car. I learned that driving my car on 710s was a piece of cake compared to the Elise and S2k on street tires. :)
As far as the cup competition, it would be nearly impossible to beat the Team Lugnuts .862 handicap. They won easily even though they had the worst PAX time.

The entire event was well done. Thanks Jayson, Art... The competition within the team was definitely a motivating factor. Considering these were the first autox runs I've ever taken in a "big" car (read: not an elise), I feel I did well. It took discipline (that I didn't have this weekend) to get 3 decent, clean runs in with each car. I think at least one of my top times in each car were carrying cones.

I was a little skeptical beforehand hearing about the cup being the most fun to be had all year, but afterwards, I understand why. And that understanding was courteousy of the rivalry between team members; you know who you are :p . The 'punk' and Jason exchanged some friendly fire on and off the course :D
I believe that Jason drove the best by bettering on average a second in the S2K and RX8, and even slightly beating Sean too. I discovered how much of a pain in the as3 my car is to drive, and I also think that our team must have driven better than the first place team as our finishing index was no where near proportional to the index difference we suffered. Team Lugnuts, if you're reading this, I don't know for sure what i'm talking about....
Although some indexes were kind of BS.
It was surprisingly difficult to get three clean, fast (i.e. not 'safe' fast runs to be clean) runs, as the knowledge of having six runs to do it in, really made me kind of lazy
In the end though, nice going by all.
I want to see 15 teams next year!
