View Full Version : X-Run (faq?)

I've heard people talk about x-runs at events and I have a few questions.
1. X-runs involve registering twice and paying double ($25 for SCCA members, $35 for non), correct?
2. X-runs can only be done after the official runs. Do they have to be done with a properly classed run group?
3. (related to 2) When you work your second work group, is there some flexibility as to during which group you work with?
I want to get seat time as I know it's the only way I'll get better. I saw how much more I was able to learn on my last 2 runs at Sat's event, so I'm getting addicted to lots of runs at one day. Besides, if I'm going to loose an entire day, might as well get more runs. 3 runs doesn't give me my fix.

Yes

Any other run group after your "official" runs - subject to the club putting on the event - if the group you WANT is really full they might ask you to pick another - but not usually.
3. (related to 2) When you work your second work group, is there some flexibility as to during which group you work with?
Not sure - usually to balance workers it would be the "scheduled" work group. If you had "special needs" etc. there could be some flexibility.

It's cheaper to do fun runs - sometimes not available in winter due to daylight, but days get longer after 12/21

Typically, X runs are done after your regular runs. You willl pay for another run group and are expected to work for another run group also. There is no set run group you would be scheduled to run your X runs in. Just pick something that makes sense as far as being after your regular run and not conflicting with your work group.
X runs per day may be limited (though never lately). X runs per group may be restricted as they don't want to overload one run group with a bunch of X runs as that would be unfair to those course workers.

Yeah, cheaper, but not available during the short days.
When the days are long like the summer, how many fun runs can a person grab usually?

3 or 4 to 10 or more to cord your tires.

I don't know if a run has much of an effect on my tires. When you autox in a tire designed to last 40k-80k, you just slide and leave little rubber behind.
10 runs... that would be so much fun.

I have seen events where we had more than 50 runs. Most people quit because they ran out of tires or energy.

That sounds like a sweet time to have cruddy tires that last and last (and a bad time to be on R-compounds... there goes your $800 in tires after one event).

If you autocross 1-2 times per month, get X runs every time, and take funs runs when they're available, you can easily cut your high-mileage tire's life in half.
The other advantage of X runs is that you can get an instructor to ride along. Great for when you're past the novice stage, or when your class runs are in the 1st run group and no instructors are available.
Some clubs will require you to work in the assigned work group for the run group in which you take X runs. Some clubs are more flexible.
I'm not sure what you mean by "properly classed run group." X runs can be taken at any time after your class runs. If you're already in the last run group, you can usually still take X runs and just get into the 2-driver lane so you wind up being done at the same time as everyone else.

I'm refering to a previous discussion where I was told that a car can only run when it's class runs, but many cars are eligible for multiple classes.

Ok, cool. I had wondered if people in group 6 just couldn't do this or not.

you should never pass on 'x' runs. its seat time!
for instance, i usually run STS but this past event STS ran 6th. so i ran SM (4th) and ran my 'x' runs 6th. different car this time, but seat time is seat time.
for two years i never missed an event, never missed an 'x' run, never missed an available fun runs. THAT is how you get seat time.

Just have some tape on you to make an x so the trailer does not think it's a rerun.

Damn you! I got a flat on my drive home.
More seriously, I need to get new tires asap (look to a new thread).

Tyres that aren't made for performance driving and leave little bits of themselves everywhere will last a lot less time than performance tyres, mainly because they are leaving little bits of themselves everywhere :) OR sometimes big bits!

Or you can register in 2 classes like I did (it might have been FS and DM that day). Hopefully, the person who's handling your registration that day understands that so you won't get your head bit off.
She got all arrogant and upset telling me I couldn't get points in the 2nd class, even after I told her I couldn't care less about points. I just wanted seat time.

Why did you not just enter X-runs? Extra seat time is what they are for.

Maybe that has since changed. Either way, at the time one of the registration guys that day told me I could but the later run class wouldn't count for points.

It's been a while, but IIRC I did enter in both FS and X. Another time a friend and I registered the same car in FS, EM, X, and some other class the same day.
RandyC

It was not changed.
You can enter a car in any class it fits, and it can be entered into different classes for the same day.
BUT.. a competitor running in any class other than X, must not have run in any other previous class. Either there was a misunderstanding, or the registration person told you something incorrect and they should not have allowed it.

Can you sign up for X-class ONLY, ie not sign up for the proper class for your car?

Per the 2005 rules, no. That sometimes gets bent for extreme cases. But normally its just easier to run in a class.
Rule say *paraphrased*X runs only after classed runs.

No. X-runs for people who signed up to run normally only.
The only difference between X-runs and normal runs is that the normal ones are scored. X-runs give you the same number of runs for your dollar.

Understood, but a friend of mine is considering going on Sunday but does not want to get up early. Apparently the run group for his car is first or second.
He doesn't care about points or winning his class or anything and just wanted some seat time, so he was wondering if he could just sign up for X-runs during whatever run group was up next when he got there, and work after that.

For example if he's running an HS legal Focus, he can choose to run IS3, STS, STX, STU, FSP, DM, EM, XP, SU, SM, SM2 or even PAX.

LOL yeah, but I can't blame him. I start work at 6am M-F, so I won't wake up early on the weekends unless it's something really important, heh.
I guess he can run SM or SU like me.

But what's more important than autox? I mean, common.
