Howdy All, I'm a member of and on the Board of Directors for SPOKES SCCA Autocross club in Austin, TX. I'll be in San Diego in April and looking for something to do while my wife is at a conference. Lucky for me I found that y'all have an event on the 22nd. Anyone mind if I impose upon you at that event? We'll be flying in from Texas but I'm sure Hertz, Enterprise, Avis, or the like will be happy to rent a decently worthless set of wheels to me.

A coujple of questions:

Is the April 22 2012 TART event open to anyone?
Is there a website where I can pre-register, or do I just show up?
Do you have loaner helmets? I can bring mine if I have too but it would be one less piece of girth on the plane if I didn't have too.

If someone is bold enough to offer a co-drive to a complete stranger, I'd be very appreciative. I've had two years of autocross experience and 5 track events in my 2006 STi in the SM class. ...Not a completely SM prepped car but has a built motor. Daily cars and SM are a tough combo :D

Thanks!

You would be more than welcome, Hank. The Sunday, April 22nd event is open to anyone with no pre-registration, just show up. It's likely to be a busy day as it's the weekend before the National Tour, so there will be some serious folks warming up. We do have loaner helmets and all that is required is a driver’s license which you get back when you return the helmet. There is also a practice on Saturday, April 21st and that will be a limited entry event, usually to the first 80 to 100 entries. Those practices are typically pre-registration only and they will fill up in the first couple of days after the flyer is posted. If you’re interested, keep an eye out on this forum or the website for when the flyer is posted and immediately mail in your entry. I don’t know where you heard about the event but our website is at http://www.sdr-scca.com/solo2/schedule/ and it has a lot of information.

I can’t offer up a ride as I sold my BM car a while ago. Our lot is very large and has some significant camber to parts of it which may be new to you. Typical courses are 50 to 70 seconds. First car out is at 9:00 AM, registration usually opens about 7:30 AM and the course will be open for walking. So blow the budget and rent something worthwhile and come out for some fun and good competition. It’s only for one day, or maybe two. :D

Skipping Mineral Wells huh?

The loaners kinda stink. I'd say it's worth the luggage space. Also note I think you'll get stuck buying a local one-day 'run card' for like $5. Check the schedule when the flyer comes out (probably not until Apr), you'll only need to be there either in the morning or the afternoon, not all day.

The loaners are fine imo. Bring a headsock if you really care, but c'mon, I just saw Larry Chan yesterday with his cheek to the asphalt to check underneath somebody else's car! It's autox!

On a more important note, "Hank," know there can be only one! (Finally I'm in a crowd where this reference might actually be appreciated.)

Nice, I think I might just bring my own lid. I know that loaner helmets can be scarce when there's a lot of spectators or Novice folks.

I was dubbed Hank by my autocross group after they saw me drunk enough times. Plus, my driving style is a bit ...enthusiastic so Hank also fits there. Drifting, understeer, and tank-slappers, FTW!! :D

My hotel is booked, I'll see y'all on the 22nd, potentially the 21st. Now all I gotta do is find a sucker rental company. weee!
