Hi,

How do the Club racing classes correlate with the Solo Classes? Specifically - I'm considering buying an '87 Mazda RX7 currently running in Improved Touring (ITS) in club races. I think it may be able to run in Street Prepared?

The Solo rules state:

"Cars listed as eligible in and prepared to the current national
Improved Touring rules are permitted to compete in their respective
Street Prepared classes. Neither Street Prepared nor Improved
Touring cars are permitted to interchange preparation rules.
Improved Touring cars may use tires which are eligible under
current IT rules even if they are not eligible in Street Prepared."

Can anyone advise which class in Street Prepared? I'm trying to figure out if a car from the racing ITS class would be competing against similary prepared cars in Solo events, and be competitive without modifications which would take it out of ITS?

Cars from the Improved Touring racing classes can be bought relatively cheaply - so to summarize my question - is a car from one of these classes going to be put into a class with other highly modified machinery, and be totaly outclassed?

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

CSP, as long as your car meets all of the Improved Touring rules for your Region....including the limitations on wheel size (15x7") and weight. No intermixing of class rules between Street Prepared and Improved Touring.

James,

Thanks for the info. The car I am considering has had the interior stripped out, no passenger seat etc. Is this a problem? Also, can weights be added to a car if it is below permitted weight?

Last question - are there noise restrictions/decibel level limits for Solo events?

Thanks

Events at Qualcomm are limited to 93dB at 50 feet. It's not an SCCA/Solo 2 regulation, it is a Qualcomm/City of San Diego reg. Sound limits are generally from the venue, not from SCCA.

SP doesn't have a minimum weight. As for the stripped interior, whatever is legal in IT is fine.

All the advice is great - thanks guys.

On the SD/Qualcomm noise level restrictions - is there a 'bolt-on / bolt-off' silencer available for race cars which are to be run in autocross on occasion? I've seen what looks like a small gas bottle regulator attached to some exhausts at events - always wondered what they are. Now I'm guessing they help with the noise problem - am I right?

If yes - are they straightforward to attach/take off?

If there is no such easy solution - do competitors with loud race cars simply change the exhaust each time they have to run in Qualcomm?

Thanks.

When the tour comes to town, you see all kinds of funky temporary mods.
