Did it have DSG or was it a manual? I didn't get the chance to check.

That was me, it did have DSG on it. It's actually my wife's car but I wanted to see how it felt thru the turns. I didn't really push it, but it felt like it would turn easy. I'll have to try it again:)

Didn't it have Michigan Manufacturer plates on it?

OOps, nevermind. Saturady was 4/1...

It was an 06 white GTI, with Superleggras (maybe Ultra) that kept running with that Si, for a magazine thing or something?

The magazine car had a manual box.

SportCompactCar had the white GTI and bronze Civic Si. Both were manuals, and both were running on 225/45R17 Avon Tech R tires. There should be an article in an upcoming issue, no idea which one.

Probably 2-3 months out if their lead time is what was a few years ago.

2 door GTi's are available now. 4 door GTi's should be available in mid summer.

I've drove a 4dr right hand drive GTi at the Car & Driver 50th anniversary event I worked at with PRo. The car was a blast, very good turn in. Ran both the GTi and Mini on the same course, pulled faster raw times in the GTi, the pesky cones were a bit in the way though, but I figure any advantage I got cliping them, was lost dealing with driving from the wrong side of the car so to speak.

Ok, the Mini was a convertable, and on run flats, but still I think the new GTi is capable of giving the Mini a run for the money in GS.

New GTi, two thumbs up!

The Civic Si we had a a comparison car at another event.... I prefered the Cobalt SS to it, more pull, better turn in, ok, not the same fit and finish. Didn't like the football field deep rounded dash on the Si either.

New Si, I give it a netural vote.

Uh, well if your comment about the availability of GTIs was in response to my message, I was talking about when the article would appear in Sport Compact Car, the magazine doing the testing.

The new GTI has one of the best ad campaigns.

I didn't drive either of the 2 cars yesterday, but just from watching the times it seemed like the Civic was consistently faster than the VW. I think Ken M turned in something like a 60.3 in the Civic close to 1.5sec faster than he could do in the GTI. A 60.3 would have handily beat DS-HS and been at the top of BS & CS... but that was with Ken driving.

I assume these were show room stock cars too (except tires).

V710s and some much needed shocks (both of them had some good lean snaps in the slalom I was working near) will probably yield another 2seconds.

The GTI did have some serious inside wheel spin exiting that hairpin as well, where the Si seemed to do just fine. I was pretty amazed at the overall times as well, but the GTI has been criticized (as usual) for how heavy it is. And I guess since the course was pretty high up in the rev range it was just the right conditions for the VTEC to kick in. ;) lol

It woulda beaten AS too. Beating BS is pretty sad... if there was actually a good driver on top of BS, the times there would be much better. ;)

Weren't both cars on Avon R compound tires?

Yes, identical tires on both cars. I was saying V710s in place of those Avons will get more time. Its too bad we didn't have a real high end MCS out there to compare.

I think that he Mini S would still take top honors, but that Civic Si looked mighty tempting for me to run next year in GS. I think you could get a V710 245/45R17 on the stock Honda Si 17X7 rim. :D

Indeed. The Civic seemed the beter of the two, at least on that day.

I think you could get a V710 245/45R17 on the stock Honda Si 17X7 rim. It will fit on the rim. That's the size I run on my 17x7 rims on my G35. I'm runing Victoracers, and I think the V710 is a little wider. The question would be whether or not it rubs. If it does rub, just step down to a 225/45R17.

I was noticing they don't have a manual tranny option on the Hybrid version anymore, just the CVT.

Sport Compact Car did their test drive/battle of the two new
hot imports to the Q'... VW GTi VS Honda Si
with same size tires to make the test a bit more even.
I really wanted to drive the Si, but only had time to
drive the GTi(time=65.5), no complaints though, it was a lotta fun!!!!:D
a lot of tire spin (mostly couse I'm not used to either FF or turbo)
but very tossable, seemed a bit less stable (taller..??) than the Si...

this was a great idea of a "real" head to head test and some of us
got the chance to participate in, maybe we should try to get more
people to come out to our playground to do their reviews, and just
in case they don't feel like driving, there will be a lot of "volunteers"
I'm sure...!

The weight of the GTI seems high enough to keep it out of contention. Throw in wheelspin, plus the looks a bit tall, and I doubt it'll fare well in autocross. Probably a fine street car though.

Boy, the Civic Si sure has porked up, too. So much weight I am wondering and doubting that it could catch an '89 if both are in ST trim.

So many cars have gained so much weight that it is a relief to see some that keep it more or less down, e.g., Miata, Corvette, Boxster and S2000. OTOH, when the Pontiac Solstice debuted hundreds of pounds heaving than the Miata, I was dissappointed.

Bob, I understood your magazine time line comment. I just was posting my thoughts on the two cars, having driven both. I just threw in the 4 door release comment, as its never been available in the US before. However I changed the subject somewhat, and when I do.....

They never brought a 4-door GTi into the U.S.? I used to work with a woman who had a diesel Golf. When the motor went south, the cheapest fix her mechanic could offer was to put the GTi motor he had in it. :D
