OK, so I'm a newbie, running an 03 S2000. I'm running uncompetitively in the STR class because of mods I did just for the street, and don't have to bucks to convert yet to a competitive class. So, I'm just having fun right now!
I was offered some street tires for a good price...some Pirelli P-Zero's. But somebody mentioned that there is a particular Pirelli street tire that is excluded by the rules.
These are the newer P Zero's (treadwear 220), (not the older P Zero System, treadwear 140, also called P Zero Direzionale and Asimmetrico), and not the R compound Corsa. I've been told that the newer PZero is a higher performance track tire than the older type PZero System, even though it's got a much higher treadwear rating.
Anybody know anything about these tires in general, and which are excluded?
Thanks from a newbie.
The Pirelli P Zero Corsa is banned.

Yes, I saw that after I posted...but, the Pirelli P Zero Corsa is an R compound tire with a treadwear rating of 60.
It's banned under the Street Touring rules (page 61) section 14.3.c
But what I don't get is the sentence right above that (section 14.3.b) says that you can't have any tire in the ST category with a treadwear rating below 140. So why would they specifically state the P Zero Corsa is banned, which has a treadwear rating of 60 anyway?

At the time of the band, pirelli was stamping the common size ST tire 140, while all the other sizes of the same tire were 60.

So Pirelli was trying to BS everybody when the first came out with the tire?
And what are peoples opinions of performance of the regular P Zero vs the Dunlop Star Spec, Kuhmo XS, Hankook RS-3 and other street tires?

Hey Warren,
Dave Crandon here. Me, you and Keith were the last ones left at the autocross school a few weeks back. We had the two silver S2000's. I was the short "heavy" guy, he was the tall skinny one.
Read the thread you posted. Good info. I'm using Star Specs for the autocross practices I've been too, but they are on heavy 18" wheels. I always buy the best I can afford, cause for the street they last a long time. Before I started autocrossing that is. Actually, I can were out the rears quick, but the fronts are lasting forever. I've got over 15,000 miles on the fronts now (about a dozen autocross days), and they are still at about 5-6/32nds. I think I'm heat cycling them out before the tread is gone.
So, I'm thinking about getting R compounds for the stock 16 inch wheels. Some used take offs of course. I know that'll put me in a Prepared class where my butt will be kicked even more, but at this point, my first year, I'm just having fun. I'd use these tires for about 3 track days a year also. One thing I won't do is change the alignment to benefit autocrossing and track days, simply cause I can't afford to switch it back to the street settings all the time. This 03 S2000 is my daily driver as well.
So...comments?
R compounds love camber, the more the better. What were you planning on running camberwise? What specific r-compound tires? Do you think something around -2 would wear out your street tires too quickly?

Don't assume anything about Prepared. It's weak locally.
And I wonder if you actually mean STREET Prepared. BSP I would assume. I find it hard to believe a daily driver is Prepared.
Unless you run a LOT of camber, it's not necessarily camber that can hurt you on the street. The inside will wear, but when you autocross you might even them out if you can find a good compromise. Like Walter said, I bet around 2 would work. I run more than that on the 'teg.
It's toe that will destroy tires on a daily driver.
Come out and talk to Matt W. He is running SSM in his S2000 these days and will absolutely be at the Dec 11 event. He ran BSP last year.
Your issue with switching to R compound is switching them out at events. Matt just drives to the event with them on to save himself the trouble of changing tires at events (it is a pain to change tires), but it makes a scary ride home when it rains.
