Cross posted from the SCNAX LA board. If interested contact me. This is a great way to support the next generation that will be paying for your social security.

I really do need volunteers, this is going to be a very large event.

Okay guys, the FSAE competition is coming to California Speedway and they need our help. This is the first time FSAE has sent a competition like this away from their home in Detroit. It is the apex of the FSAE students season where the cars they've engineered all year long get tested and judged.

Ian Stewart (Art's sometime's Z co-driver) is our main point of contact. He is asking for 10 volunteers from EACH club to help out. Club racing experiance is a plus, but not really necessary. I believe the brunt of volunteers are needed for Friday's activities, which is much of the performance testing.

So, the PFM boys that we've been rooting for for the past 5 years need our help big time. I encurage anyone with the time to come forward and volunteer. Please either post here or PM me, I'll be needing a list of members by the next committee meeting (Apr 19). Art plans on being there all days. If we don't get enough participation, I will probably go on Friday.

Edit: I forgot to mention. There will be some sort of incentive. I believe there will be a free practice in the works for those who help out.

Hey Everyone,

As you may already know, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is hosting their collegiate formula car design competition as a west coast event (called FSAE West) for the first time this year in the interior of Cal Speedway June 14 thru 17.

This is an engineering design competition that provides competing schools the opportunity to design and build an open wheel race car. They bring their designs to the competition where they are judged by engineers from the motorsport industry based on the design, cost, and performance of their car....

The performance part is where we come in....

SAE has asked the Solo 2 organization to volunteer our time and expertise to organize the dynamic test portions of the competition.

This includes:
Skid Pad (Friday morning)
Acceleration (Friday morning)
Auto X (Friday Afternoon)
Endurance (Saturday Morning)

We are looking for 10 or more volunteers from each club (based on your experience, interest and availability) to function as course workers, flaggers, grid etc..

Basically, everything we do at an AutoX championship.

The event will include representatives from the many Motorsport companies here in southern California, such as TRD, Swift, Cosworth, Honda, and Tilton to name a few..

So you ask how much time do I need to commit???

Time: Friday and/or Saturday June 16 and 17, plus a practice run scheduled for May 6th.

Where: Cal Speedway

The practice event on Saturday May 6th in lot 12 at the Speedway will serve as a warm up for the real event a month later and in return, we are working on a free AutoX practice for the volunteers Sunday May 7th. Most importantly you will helping Solo 2 and SAE support our future engineers.

I would like the board member reps from each club to compile lists of volunteers that will be presented at the next board meeting, so if you are interested, please inform your club’s rep and provide:

name
availability (Saturday and/or Sunday)
shirt size (yes you get a free shirt out of this too!!
e-mail address

We have put together a committee within Solo 2 to prepare for the event. The Committee will be meeting briefly following the board meeting every month, so if you have any questions, please have your club rep voice them at the meeting when we are there to answer…

You are also welcome to e-mail me at navstokes@yahoo.com but I would prefer to work through the board and post info on the forum in order to convey info more efficiently….

This event should prove to be that start of a long and fruitful relationship between SAE and Solo2, given that it will be the first of what will become an annual event at the speedway!!

Let do our part to make this event and those to follow it GREAT!!

Regards,

Ian Stewart

I'd be willing to lend a hand on the proposed Saturday. Although the free practice thing would conflict with a champ here. Still sounds like fun, provided I'm in the country and employed at that time.

I think I have an idea to make the "free practice" thing a little more flexible on dates. I'll let you know.

Friday is when they need the masses, but I'm sure any help will be appreciated. I need the committment to be firm by Apr19th though, because I'm going to name names at that point (we can add to the list after that).

I can probably make a full Friday by then.

The only issue as stated is that we sometimes get a week notice before we have to go to China......if we're lucky. It can at times be as little as a day notice.

I will definately help! Please put me down. I will also send you an email. This will be so cool because I am actually planning to join the UCSD formula SAE once I transfer.

I will be there as well. The UCSD team should be there, also.

Ditto on that, January 07 I'm plotting a coup. It should be interesting from what I've seen of UCSDs team these past few years...

I'm interested, the May practice is iffy but the June dates won't interfere with anything.

... the May practice is iffy but the June dates won't interfere with anything.I'm just short of final approval for my 'Plan'. I've proposed instead of making one "Free Day" as the incentive for Volunteers, that we give a $45 gift certificate, which is the going price for an LA practice these days. Then you can use that certificate at any practice you can make.

So right now I've got strong commitments from Andrew (Vo?) and Zads (who are you?) and mild commitments from Ryan and Nik.

I greatly appreciate the help. There's plenty of time for others to volunteer too.

I'm newly part of SCNAX, formerly of UCSD SAE..
Chairman in 2004-2005,
President in 2003-2004,
Frame/Suspension/Drivetrain Design in 2002-2003.

As for whats cooking with UCSD SAE, they're switching to the newest Eaton supercharger (smaller, lighter, more efficient). Some more fancy CNC machine work for the suspension parts this year, a custom designed and machined aluminum hewland differential housing. Some more internal engine work for more boost (forged pistons, rods, knife edged crank).
Hopefully this year they'll make brake rotors which aren't so thin, that they turn all sorts of scary colors when you use them.
Probably some other little things in the works.. I'm not sure, I've been busy with my own stuff.

The FSAE folks have asked me for my list of volunteers for the June 16-17 event. So this is what I have:

Ryan Klaso - Friday? Saturday?
Andrew Vo - Anytime?
Charles Wang - Anytime?
Nik Kruhmin - Anytime?

Art Rinner and I both plan on being there Friday and Saturday as well. If anyone else wants to help that would be greatly appreciated.

I need e-mail address (or contact phone #) and T-shirt sizes to give to the organizers by Wednesday night. E-mail me off line at woodrufj@yahoo.com.

Are any of you LA region members?

Also PFM (Pomona FSAE team) is having some sort of practice/FSAE tune up event on May 6th and 7th. They would like some volunteers for that as well. I don't know exactly what's suppose to happen on that weekend, but this will be in our normal autoXing lot at CalSpeedway so I'm assuming it will be mostly AutoX like. And I'd plan on getting some driving time in your own cars.

If anyone is interested in helping May6th and 7th, let me know at the above e-mail address.

Thanks guys.

I'd like to be there both days, but not knowing my working situation yet I can't commit. I am on the committee with Ian. I also hope to be able to help during the May testing part of the event.

Which day needs people more, Friday or Saturday?

I'll tentatively sign up for Friday... so I don't use up my weekend, though if Saturday needs more bodies I can do that instead.

How early are we needed and when is the event done for the day? I might drive the mid-engine Mini up but don't want to drive home in the dark.

Oh, and my name's Kurt.

Friday needs the mass of people. I don't know if they have an exact schedule for the day just yet, but I'll ask around. If you want to be home by dark, I'm sure that could be accomidated. But to be clear, the June weekend is working the event only, there won't be an autoX for you to race in. The reward is a free practice at some other point in time.

Understood, I wouldn't track the Mini that far from home anyway (without a trailer.) I was only asking about the hours, when to be there, to know whether I'd be driving either direction in the dark.

Okay gents, due to some major mis-communications I think the rug has been pulled out from my recruiting effort.

Here are the clarified details

May 6th, Saturday, is the FSAE event dry run. It will include several FSAE teams doing their thing plus our workers getting instruction on what’s happening.

May 7th, Sunday, is the incentive autoX practice. It is urged that you try and make this practice, but if you can't you'll be issued a $45 certificate good at any other practice (some practices are a few $$ more, doesn't guarantee you'll get in).

June 14th, 15th, Wed Thur, is the beginning of the FSAE competition. There is no need for our help on these days.

June 16th, Fri, is the main performance testing day. This is when the FSAE group needs the brunt of our volunteers.

June 17th, Sat, is the final day with some endurance testing. Minimal help is needed from our guys.

So, here's the rub. To be a volunteer, and thereby get the free practice incentive, you must attend the May 6th dry run AND the June 16th (or in special cases June 17th) days. This is very different than before since May 6th is now also REQUIRED.

I know this will create some conflicts, in fact I can not make May 6th and will be dropping myself off the list.

I'll try to contact each of you that showed interest off line to reassess this event. If anyone else is interested, post here or e-mail me at woodrufj@yahoo.com.

After much of my complaining, the FSAE committee has sofened the May 6th required day to "Recommend". If you're comfortable working a course, you can just work the main event in June (and I think just about all of us are comfortable).

Also, it looks like they've found a need for more people on Saturday June 17th. So if you we're on the fence because our main need was a weekday, now you can volunteer for Saturday. Keep in mind the incentive is a free practice, likely on the great plains of cal speedway lot 12.

So back on track. I'm going to use the previous availiblity info and pass it on to Ian, the organizer. E-mails will probably start flying around.

Ian's latest message:

Also, the May 6th training event is optional but STRONGLY recommended!!

The main thing is that we have experienced people (“experienced” meaning you have been and are comfortable being a course worker during an autoX) out there for the dynamic events of the formula competition.

After further discussion this weekend, we have defined a need for volunteers Saturday morning as well….

In total we need

40 people on Friday June 16th (7 am to 5 pm)
40 people on Saturday Morning June 17th (7 am to noon)

This is in addition to the 5 of us on the committee…

At this point there are 5 that have volunteered and 3 of the five are physically unable to shag cones….

Please everyone, if you can help at all Friday and/or Saturday June 16th and or 17th, we need you!!!!

I had many verbal “maybes” this weekend, but that isn’t enough. Whether you are sure of your availability or not, please email me (navstokes@yahoo.com) if you are interested in being a part of this great event!!!

And would the club reps please forward me any lists that they have tallied thus far??

That means you Jay!! :)

Kurt, I need a last name.

Andrew, you're signed up for this Saturday. If you have any questions about the facility I can try and answer them.

If others are interested in volunteering, its certianly not too late.
