So I'm thinking of getting a cheap beater, and there seems to be a good supply of "leaky head gasket" older Beemers on the net. If it is in fact just "a leaky head gasket" are these a decent buy?

I would love to have one.

If the price was right I would not let a head gasket stop me on an old bimmer. You going to have to redo the heads anyway.

If the price was right. Which would be LOW on any car with a blown head gasket.
