View Full Version : How many runs could we make in one car?

I've basically taken the year off from autocrossing (I only did it for fun previously anyway) to focus on a bigger grassroots motorsport venue: The 24 Hours of LeMons (http://www.24hoursoflemons.com). Read the link, but for the uninitiated it's an endurance race series for cars purchased and prepared for less than $500 (safety equipment excluded).

Some friends of mine picked up an '87 BMW 325e and built the world's only BMW with the pricks on the outside: The Porcubimmer! (http://www.porcubimmer.com)

We ran the last CA event at Altamont in April but the car was sidelined by a blown clutch and bad computer. Now we're going to be running the race at Thunderhill in December.

Anyway, the whole point of this post is that due to time/budget/transportation limitations, and the fact that there aren't any tracks within 100 miles of here, we don't have many opportunities to test out the car to find potential problems or sort things out before the big race. So I was thinking of taking the car down to a Solo2 event, but was wondering feasibly how many run groups we could drive the car in while switching drivers? I suppose in theory we could run all 6 if we had 6 drivers, but what about realistically?

Thanks!

I love the Porcubimmer "the world's only BMW with the pricks on the outside":rotflmao:

If you are just doing X-runs, you could run 2 drivers per run group and get them all done in 3 groups.

I'm confused... How could we have two drivers in one run group in one car?

By getting in the two driver line and being sent out twice as often. It's common.

I didn't even realize that's an option. Thanks for the heads up. So I assume both drivers would then have to work at the same time too?

If you guys pay people to work for you/pick up workers at home depot
You could run all 6 groups.

But I think your best bet would be to try to buy multiple spots at the practice

You could pay for two sets of x-runs for each driver. Each driver would go in the 2-driver line (even though they would be alone; the car would be doing it's 6 laps). With 6 drivers, you could do 36 laps, but it would cost $25 * 2 * 6... $300 plus numbers and SCCA for each driver.

I'd like to, but we won't be able to make the next practice, and the only event after that but before our race is the champ event in November.

You should probably scope out an event's operation before attempting to max out the runs. What you're talking about can be done, but it's complicated to pull off. And if your just learning how the event flows at the same time, you're going to have problems.

And you mentioned this was as a shake down... what happens if you're car dies at run 8 of 36? Not that it would be better to do so at the event itself, but you get the idea.

So no one has to listen to the snippy chick at the registration table anymore about getting more than three fun runs? Good grief and good riddance. I haven't been back since.

Hey Scott, love the car. I would have donated the Zephyr to the cause had I known you were involved.
