I haven't been keeping track of all the Hankook/Nitto/Yoko/etc. tire introductions lately. Is there a known consensus (or top couple) choice for ST classes right now? I gotta get off these stock hoops.

Kumho MX was on a lot of the top cars at Nationals last year.

what car is this for? i think the smaller ST cars (civics) are running MX while the bigger cars (M3) are running aznies.

MPO:
for the money: Azenis are still King, then Kooks(slightly stiffer sidewall than the MX's), after MX's... the Yokos are arguably beeter but a LOT more expensive...
I run "old style" azenis 215's and I love them...!:D

P.S. U have a PM...

For the money, but leaving that out ... look at STS and STX national results and you'll find the Kumho MX.

I have heard that the tire choices at Nationals might be influenced by contingency money rather than performance.

Yeah, but you have to win to get paid contingency money. Last year's STS champ, Ken Motonishi, might be at Sunday's event so you can ask him.

i believe ken gets money to run those.

i heard leslie beat him except she hit a cone, and she absolutely runs azenis.

i have heard NO ONE say anything is better than the azenis (except you bob, just now).

For the money Kook's can't be beat, they also happen to be in a size I want on my WRX (235/40-17).
If budget is not a concern I would try the Yokohama advan AD-07 (it's pictured in the Tire Rack ad up top) unfortunately the are about 80% more per tire than the Hankooks.

I would argue that the difference between MX's and Azenis' is much less than the difference between your skill level and Leslie's or Ken's, so flip a coin, pick a tire, and go have some fun. :)

Before the all the 615 sizes came out, the MX was considered a better tire, especially at handling heat. The 615 is better than the 215, but it still needs to be sprayed between runs on hot days.

STX was actually won last year by someone from AZ on Yokohamas. They're all competitive tires, so pick one. ;)

And, in the interest of full disclosure, my Miata has 615s for the street and Kumho 710s for racing. :D

If you want to win on the national level, and are amongst the most talented in the sport, you can probably go on either.

If you want to be competitive regionally, aren't the best driver in the world, and don't think you're going to be racing Ken, Leslie, James G, Nino, Brett, Jeff, J. Rho, or any of those other annoyingly talented national drivers in class, you can also choose either.

But, if these middle conditions don't apply, Falkens are a better bet.

I'm not saying where I think I fit in these categorizations, but I've got enough info to buy some tires, which was my objective. So thanks all!

After running a Honda in STS with the MX's, RT-215's, and RT-615's I'd have to say that I liked the RT-215's the best for overall feel and grip. Can't beat the price, I've only run the 615's in the 205/40-16 size and while the grip was good, the feel was dicey on certain surfaces. I haven't run them in a 205/50-15, so poop on my opinion :-)

Toyo T1-R's were great in the 225/40-14 size if you took care of them, ours had too much street time and heat cycling to get a good assesment. Someone with more foresight and a second set of wheels would have to get more out of them....but they were GREAT the first 6-15 laps after being shaved to 2/32nds. Marginal at full tread, much like the MX.

After running the Hankooks on the Mazda, I'd say its a fine tire if you're getting them for free, and/or you happen to drive a Subaru. I have don't drive a Subaru.........just like the FK-451, the tire's lower level of grip was made up for by the Subie's ability to manufacture its own grip in certain situations.

After seeing JRho's testing and many other personal affirmations with regards to the Yokohama Neova AD07, if you have the $$ and room under the fenders, definitely go for it....awesome tire, but you gotta pay for it. I would totally go for a set of 17x7.5's and 225/45-17 Yok's but the bill gets a little steep, though the heavy contingency is nice. Yok officially supports all of the ST classes except for STS2, which instantly kills my decision to buy them. Oversight maybe, but it has kept me from ordering a set this past month.

So the Hankooks will have to do for now....I'll shave the next set and see how they feel.

I'm having my second set of Hankooks shaved on Tuesday. I hope I can keep up with the Yokohama shod BMWs in STX. Derek was VERY fast on brand new Yoks last sunday in Fontana.
