Ok, Love racing in all forms and curious if I can join a class with my vehicles and which? First I read about the SUV ban and controversy but wasnt sure because someone listed a GMC Typhoon (4.3,Turbo,AWD)as exempt. Is this true? I have a 92 Typhoon and would prefer to run it if possible because its a Automatic. Second I have a 87 Chevy sprint Turbo(1.0L) with a manual. If so what club and class should I look into? And now the BIGGEST Question.....I am disabled and want to get out of the houe and socialize and race, but I only have use of my right arm.Would I be allowed to race?I do have a CDL and drive daily. This is why the auomatic would be more suiting for me.I appreciate any help offered and would love to get back to doing something I love since my Motorcycle accident. Thanks ALL!!!!!! Chris:waving:

Chris, This is from the 2008 Solo Rules:
3.1 ELIGIBLE VEHICLES
A Solo event is open to any vehicle that can pass safety inspection,
has the minimum bodywork specified by these Rules, and is properly
muffled, except that vehicles with wheelbases exceeding 116
inches may be excluded by the Event Chairman if he determines, at
his discretion, that they cannot readily negotiate the course. This
decision shall be made in advance if possible and included in the
advance publicity and supplementary regulations. Cars need not be
licensed or licensable for road use, so long as they otherwise comply
with these Rules.
Cars designated as being of a model year later than the current year
are not eligible to compete in Divisional, Tour, or Solo National
Championships, unless they have been specifically classed by the
SEB. A newly-classed vehicle is not eligible for the current year’s
Solo National Championships unless its listing was published no
later than the July issue of the official SCCA publication.
Unstable vehicles with a high center of gravity and a narrow track,
including SUV’s, minivans, and 4WD pickups, must be excluded
(e.g. Suzuki Samurai, Scion XB, Jeep CJ series, and GEO Tracker/
Suzuki Sidekick). Extra caution should be exercised with nontraditional
vehicles, e.g. trucks using racing slicks.
Physically disabled drivers may use alternate vehicle controls and
preparation items appropriate for the nature of their disability. In
the case of a driver using alternate controls, extra care should be
taken to ensure that the driver does have adequate control of the
vehicle, and that the control mechanisms can stand up to
competition use. A waiver from the SCCA Technical Department is
required for the use of such equipment in Divisional and National
events. Requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Notice there are no vehicle exemptions listed. However, the wording seems to be a bit ambiguous becasue there are such things as SUVs, etc. which are not, "Unstable vehicles with a high center of gravity and a narrow track." Also, the part about handicapped drivers is not directly on point unless you have any non-standard controls. I imagine that part was really written with drivers w/o use of their legs in mind.
There is a member of the SCCA's SEB (Solo Executive Board) who posts here from time to time, who will hopefully weigh in on both issues.
Hope you can come out and join us.

nalbar

Both cars are listed as legal in stock classes;
http://www.scca.com/documents/Solo%20Rules/2008_Stock_Category_Classifications_By_Manufacture r.pdf
However, no turbo version of the sprint or typhoon is listed so I don't know about its class. I would assume they go in the class listed, sprint in HS, typhoon in FS. As long as they are stock.
As long as neither is raised, bring it out.
Come out, ask for Warren

...no turbo version of the ...typhoon is listed.
All Typhoons are turboed.
There is a special call out in the rule book that says something like "any equipment necessary for a disabled person to race is allowed". So no worries there. If you ever get a chance you should seen Jerry Lamb's set up from Seattle (with no use of his legs, he drives a manual ... and fast).
The question on classing though, what modifications do the cars have? I've yet to meet a stock Typhoon or sprint turbo.

Thanks for the replies everyone!!!! I dont need anything to help me drive and I do drive a manual. But to shifting in the corners is out, but I could adapt my driving by shifting earlier or later. The Typhoon is stock turbo AWD but has a chip and larger injectors. I have a larger A2W intercooler and a A2A intercoler but not on it yet. And the Sprint is a stock turbo that I just had the compressor case welded up and need a head gasket for it but nothing done yet. Was gonna put bigger intercooler on it or Meth. injection on it and possibly Ty also. But will wait to see what is alowed and what would put me in a different class. I have yet to drive the sprint but heard they are a blast to drive and can really hold their own.:rotflmao: And would prefer to drive it then since my arm wont be an issue. Thanks Again EVERYONE!!!!! Lots to read up on now and hope to be at the next event to check it out. Thanks!!!

Depending on the car/truck and course there is often not much shifting. In my car (z06) 9 out of 10 courses I short shift once & run the course in 2nd gear to the end. The small cars shift more.

Typhoons are cool.:rock2:
Although not specifically listed, I think you could run it in it's current configuration and be legal for E Street Prepared (ESP).
All American inline 6, V6 and V8
sedans and pick-ups not otherwise
classified. Other sedans over 3.0L
not otherwise classified. (See
Section 15.1.C for update/backdate limitations.
The Street Prepared category allows computer, intercooler changes, increased boost on the stock turbo and parts swapping between model years of the same car, along with lots of suspension allowances.
It does not allow methanol injection, but does allow water injection.

I'll second that. I've been right next to him in grid on several occasions. And been beaten by him on more than one of them. He's got custom hand controls for throttle, brake, and clutch, and a button on the clutch lever that pulls a 1-2 shift. He works all that at the same time as steering, all with two hands. And does it fast enough to be competitive at a National level. Freakin' amazing.
Also amazing is that sometimes, he shows up with a co-driver, who uses the original pedals, and the two of them remove or reinstall the entire set of hand controls between each run. And never once did I see them not be ready to go when grid wanted to send them.

Update/backdate swaps are legal only between models/years that are listed on the same line in the rulebook.
