Hello! My name is Rhett and I am new here (and somewhat to San Diego)… :waving:
…I would really like to start auto-X’ing my modded Taurus soon. I would be a novice and could use some advice. Can someone give me a general idea as to what classes I could run in and what additional safety equipment I may need in order to start? Also, what is the best way to start – just jump in heads first and start racing in events or…..?
1990 Taurus SHO
Vortech Supercharged
Cammed
Quaife Limited Slip Differential
Subframe connectors
Tokico struts/Eibach springs
13” brakes
Street tires
Etc.
Would I be in a different class if I removed the supercharger?
Also, can someone tell me if there are any open road racing tracks or hill climbs or other racing events in the area aside from drag strips?
Many thanks for any info, advice, or comments…

and what additional safety equipment I may need in order to start? Snell M95 helmet or better. No special belts, suits, seats or roll protection (in your car) needed.
Also, what is the best way to start – just jump in heads first and start racing in events Yep. Any time not spent racing is wasted.
1990 Taurus SHO
Vortech Supercharged <---- OEM? or aftermarket?
Cammed <--- Class bump straight to Street Mod
Quaife Limited Slip Differential
Subframe connectors <--- Class bump straight to Street Mod
Tokico struts/Eibach springs
13” brakes <--- OEM size or bigger? Calipers too, or just rotors?
Street tires
Etc. <--- ?
Would I be in a different class if I removed the supercharger? The cam and subframe connectors are doing just as much 'damage' to your classing as an aftermarket supercharger. Technically without the SC, you're allow a lower minimum weight in Street Mod, but I doubt you can get anywhere near any of the minimums.
Also, can someone tell me if there are any open road racing tracks or hill climbs or other racing events in the area aside from drag strips?
Nope. Holtville is shut down as far as I know. Nearest places are California Speedway ($$$), Willow Springs and Button Willow. No hill climbs, this is California, too litigious.

Thanks for your response Jay.
It looks like it would be “Street Mod” regardless, but here are all of the main ‘mods’:
3.2L Lowered Compression Block (vs. 3.0L stock)
Ported Heads & intake/Cams
Stainless Fuel Lines
Vortech Centrifugal S/C’r
Water Injection
EEC Tuner (TwEECer RT)
13” retrofitted Mustang Cobra brakes & calipers (vs. 10.1” stock rotors)
Tokico struts/Eibach springs
Front/Rear Strut Tower Braces
Subframe Connectors
Adjustable Rear Control Arms
Quaife LSD
17” rims with street tires
Anyways, thanks again for your insight.....looks like I'll be purchasing a helmet for starters...

Trust Steve here on helmet selection. He's had enough knocks on the head to know what makes a good helmet.:wallbash:

The sub frame connectors more than likely put you in a modified class which may have other requirements.

The sub frame connectors more than likely put you in a prepared class which may have other requirements.
New this year to Street Prepared (which carries into Street Mod)
15.2 E. Longitudinal (fore-aft) subframe connectors (“SFCs”) are permitted
with the following restrictions:
1. They must only connect previously unconnected boxed frame
rails on unibody vehicles.
2. Each SFC must attach at no more than three points on the
unibody (e.g. front, rear, and one point in between such as a
seat mount brace or rocker box brace).
3. SFCs must be bolted or welded, but welding must be to the
OE subframe stampings, not to the floor pan in between.
4. No cutting of OE subframes or floorpan stampings is permitted.
Drilling is permitted for mounting bolts only.
5. No cross-car/lateral/triangulated connections directly between
the driver’s side and passenger’s side SFCs are permitted.
Connections to OE components such as tunnel braces or
closure panels via bolts are allowed and count as the third
point of attachment. No alteration to the OE components is
permitted.
6. SFCs may not be used to attach other components (including
but not limited to torque arm front mounts or driveshaft
loops) and may serve no other purpose.
