View Full Version : Where to have wheels re-built?

I have a set of 3-pc wheels that need to have the outer halves replaced. Can someone recommend a shop (*possibly within some reasonable proximity to San Diego) that can do the re-build? I have the new outer halves.

Thanks,
Sean

RB Motoring, of El - Monte CA, regularly imports refinishes and reassembles Japanese 2 and 3 piece wheels.

Bring them to the pro along with a six pack of some dark brown, rather thick beer. You should be able to get Gary T or Jason U to do them for you. :rotflmao:

Larry Dennstedt recommended
US Wheel Remanufacturing
to me. They did good work at a reasonable price, but you are after something different... although I'd be surprised if they couldn't help you out. A bit on the colorful side, but they do lots of work for the offroad racing community.
Give them a try

Are your wheels dented and bent, or do they need replacing for some other reason?

US Wheel did a good job for me at a reasonable price on a set of 4 SSR wheels. I bought a set of used wheels that had been road raced and bent and dented and out of round. They fixed them and painted them. They took about 2 weeks to get it done when I was told about a week when I dropped them off.

I don't know if Gary will agree with that beer choice :) And while I don't want to speak for him, I suspect he would agree with me that it's gonna take a lot more than that to rebuild wheels for someone. We seem to do it a lot (I think I've done about 30 wheels in the last 2 years), but we also don't like doing it as it's tedious and annoying.

Sean, are these your Kodiaks? I'd recommend doing them yourself, it's not hard. I believe the Kodiaks use fewer bolts than CCWs (30) and don't have nuts or washers, so in that sense they'll be easier. The most annoying part of rebuilding wheels that have already been assembled is removing the silicone and prepping for the re-build.

yes.

I could do them myself, but this is the part I was not looking forward to. That and re-sealing them. Perhaps I'll give one a try.

Sean (sorry for the misspelling earlier) if you're not in a huge rush, I've got a few different silicone removing compounds I'm going to try out on my next rebuild. Should be sometime next week. If any of them work close to advertised, it should make rebuilding easier. I'll let you know.

Also, I recommend rebuilding in-front of your TV, with a beer nearby. That's how I do it anyways...

I can shoot you some general directions if you want.

I'm pretty sure Sean is not a beer guy... so I volunteer to drink and watch tv while he rebuilds.

I will do whatever it takes to keep the car out of SS.

Goof off & wood/plastic scraper might work.

Also I think Home Depot has some silicone remover for bathtub silicone seals

This is the same thing I was thinking at first, but I'm leaning even more to Jason's idea of drinking beer and watching Sean do the work instead

Even if Sean is not a beer guy, the case may not last an hour with the other three. :rotflmao:

Well, that settles it. Looks like we're having a wheel building party. Endless beer for the boys, single malt and top shelf booze for the sophisticated drinkers. Entertainment will include whatever sports/racing/american idol(!) you can find on tv and watching me make a first attempt at re-building these wheels. $20 at the door, single ladies free as always...:rotflmao:

Jason (#2 of 3), that'd be great if you could send over some notes on the process. Thanks - Sean
