View Full Version : Cell phones and lack of insurance don't mix

Tip: If you're going to drive in rush hour traffic and talk on your cell phone, perhaps you should consider carrying more than the state-minimum liability insurance. Unfortunately, I was "contacted" by someone who had a shiny new 2006 Acura MDX and barely more than the state-mandated amount of coverage.
My insurance company totaled the car, and will probably be having their lawyers contact the other party.

As you can see by that ding on the spare tire rim in the last one, it was a nice little "bump." Luckily, I only suffered a slightly scraped knuckle. My G35 won't be making any more autox appearances though, as it's now the property of 21st Century.
Scott,
It's good to see you post. It's just too bad that your post is about an accident in the G35. I'm glad your alright. That's to bad about the G35. That truly sucks, but now on to bigger (or smaller) and better things. What will be your next Autox car????
Oh yeah, we held a SCNAX meeting this last Sunday after the Champ event and we voted you president and Russ W. treasuerer of SCNAX SDR, you really have to get out more often. ;) J/K.

I've been away too long. Even if it's a Yugo, I need to get back there and run something around the cones. :)
I'll probably run the VW I have until I come across something that looks like a promising dedicated autox car. No idea what that will be yet. Although, having driven Jay's truck in the past, I can't shake the thought of a Mazda B4000.

I think a salvaged G35 would make a fun XP car :-)

Probably would. Damage was all to the back end. Trunk was split open in 2 places on the floor and the exhaust was hit, so as-is there's a carbon monoxide danger. Right-rear quarter is shifted, you can see the rear passenger door gap isn't even, it even chipped the paint in the door well at one point. The sunroof won't even open properly now. Alignment may be an issue if the unibody isn't properly put back to factory spec. The repair estimate from Philip Thearle's was around $17k. Mechanically the car was still drivable, and the rear suspension didn't seem to be damaged. It still has the Koni Yellows on it. There was also a rumor starting to surface about oil consumption issues with these engines, and mine was gulping in excess of a quart every 3,000. I'm told it went to the Insurance Auto Auction San Diego. That was about a week ago.
I couldn't afford to keep it and do anything with it at this time, I need to be able to get to and from work first and play second. The practical side of me kicked in and I'm commuting in a shiny new Hyundai Elantra SE. All the safety features, better mileage/radio/warranty, and half the horsepower!

There was a Yugo that raced in the Chicago region that got top time of day.
They had a Dodge 2.5 turbo (from the mini-van) in front and a Cadillac v8 in the back. It had two tacks, one shift, was widdened 2 inches...
... and had stock seats.

I just looked at something that said there was only 5k minimum for property damage in CA. Is that right?

That is correct, and the person in the shiny Acura actually had twice that. Woot!
Quite a few states are bumping the minimum to 20-25k. Texas has been 15k ever since I started driving. Alabama is trying to raise theirs to 25k. Legally, you are liable for damages in excess of your coverage. Extra liability coverage beyond the minimum doesn't even cost that much. To raise my policy from 50k to 100k property damage liability would cost me $2.00/month.

Sad to hear about the car, where will Garfield cling to now?

He is sitting on a shelf awaiting repairs. His previous location was precariously close to the child seat, and as such he's suffering from a couple of ripped seams. He's been with me too long, so he will be repaired and returned to his place of honor in my little commuter car.
