View Full Version : Attendance at the National Tour

As of 3/6, the number of entries for the tour is only 225. Any idea why the number is so low?

Some things I have heard mentioned:

1) Event cost
2) Poor economy
3) The pro and tour are not on back-to-back weekend

Have you heard any different reasons? Your input here would be welcome.

Just for information purpose, unless the entries grow, there will be 4 run groups instead of 5.

Thanks.

Procrastination.

Wait until just after the price hike to evaluate (Monday morning I think).

To me, the economy has been up and down before. I think the cost of gas is a larger issue.

What does change people's decisions to come from long distances is gas prices. Hauling from Northwest Region at 10 miles to a gallon can cost..quick math-

1200 miles each way x 2
2400 miles total
2400/10 = 240 gallons of gas
240 x $3.50 = $840.00

Add in some fast food and a hotel stay and you are at $1000 for travel. Add in cost of tires, lodging down here and whatever... I don't think the cost of the event is that large a factor.

Not having the Tour and Pro back to back is a killer I think. I'd be willing to bet a fair amount of folks doing the normal national "circuit" would choose the pro over the tour in a heartbeat. Having them only a week apart made it a reasonable effort to stash the car somewhere or just take the week off work.

I guess I see little reason why someone doing the pro wouldn't run the tour if they can make it work. Having them further apart makes it harder to make it work.

I'm considering Packwood this year for the first time. If they put the events two weeks apart, I probably wouldn't go.

There are two contributing factors for me:

1) The Tour and Pro are not on consecutive weekends. That means that I have to go without my only car for two work weeks, and the weekend in between.

2) There are two Divisional events on back to back weekends in July. One round trip to San Diego a year is enough for me, so I'll do the events with better logistics.

For me its tires. Can't get big car 710 rears. Saving what I have now for local & divisional. I have an order in (weeks ago) to my Discount Tire buddy, but nada.

In general, I think travel cost is stopping a few & the delay weekend between tour & pro.

I'll make a wager now that, if gas prices don't ease, Nationals will be down on attendance also. There's a limit for the average guys budget.

I would welcome you, but I am also out of town attending the Sebring race in Florida. Assuming no plane flight issues, I will be back by noon Saturday in time to jump into the car.

Welcome anyway!

I'm very easy on cars. This particular motor was made in mexico and died at 40,000 miles and change. So much metal....everywhere! The next one will be stronger and double the power!

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers." -Cliff Claven

Hey, man - sorry to stand you up! Would like to have met you...and your co-driver - Pat Smith from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada who came down for this event! In the meanwhile I'm working in Farmington, New Mexico and won't be back until Thursday (20th) just in time for the school/practice next weekend at Fontana. That's life I guess.....and the fact that there is no beer on Friday! :D

Anyhow, those of you who know me, please excuse me for not being present and introducing these great folks who came a long ways to compete in GS in a red Sentra and, particularly, Pat from the Great White North! Perhaps if you know me, you can do me a favor and introduce yourself when you have a moment. I know there are a few other Canucks in the crowd down here too! :D

Thanks! See you soon.

Hmmmm....I might be able to up the attendance by one since I will be heading that way but I arrive in Long Beach tonight....and won't be at the site until the morning! I don't have tires for my car either.....

Therefore, by a freak incidence, is anyone looking for a co-driver/tire-warmer?

2007 CSP Nat'l Champ - sure I can help you out! Warren? Anyone (else) can help me here? I see the entry deadline is 7 pm tonight....help....Otherwise I'll be spectating.....better than being in New Mexico I suppose! hahaha

Thanx!

Reijo (try my cell - 562-455-7087....but I will be boarding for Phoenix from Durango in about an hour.....so I may not answer right away to make arrangements).

OK....this is nothing short of impressive! Dave D. has offered a ride in his S2k, George Schilling helped to put it all together (I owe you one buddy!) getting me entered etc. etc. over the phone. I just landed in Phoenix and I get another call from George that Ron T. is looking to share a room. Wow! It's all together.

You know, I have to say with people like these around, winning is nothing.....just being associated with people like these is enough!

Thanks all!

See you bright and early!

Reijo
