ChaseCam has been selected by Australia's V8supercars as the mandatory recording system for 2008.

Release Date: 21/01/2008 New initiatives designed improve the judicial process, vehicle recoveries and enable spectators to better identify individual cars are amongst the improvements to the 2008 V8 Supercar Championship Series.

The V8 Supercar Championship Series begins in Adelaide next month with the Series being officially launched in Melbourne on February 6. Two compulsory team test days will be held in Victoria and Queensland on the 12th and 14th of February followed by the Clipsal 500 from February 21-24.

V8 Supercars Australia will introduce “Chase Cam” into every car in the Series as the in-car camera used by the judiciary to review incidents and also for broadcast quality pictures that can be used for television when required.

These are in addition to the Seven in-car cameras already utilised for the telecast.

The Chase Cam replaces the former in-car cameras that were older technology and more difficult to extract data from. The Chase Cam technology allows a hard disk to simply be removed from the unit and re-inserted into a television or computer for instant replays.

The digital recorders write directly to Compact Flash for easy drag-and-drop computer transfer in Mpeg-2 format. Extremely rugged, it is currently being used by many top racing teams and several television programs. The video processor allows for simple picture-in-picture or split screen video.ChaseCam just completed a test use on all A1GP cars in New Zealand and passed with flying colors.

ChaseCam is now in use by three Formula 1 teams with the most recent being Redbull Racing. We are also talking with Super Aguri.

More to come....

Look for an announcement soon about ChaseCam and ProSolo.

And we will be sponsoring the SCCA Runoffs in September.

Note, we may be looking for some more part time help at ChaseCam. Applicants must be sane, ethical, and not use drugs. Duties are general office, phones, support, and light assembly. Potential for travel to races and trade shows.

We have had people here that put in more hours, like Bill Schenker. But no, this is just to help out. I expect we really would want someone that can put in 4-6 hours per day to help out. If they could put in more, that would be great.

Now if it did turn out that they would end up doing trade shows and traveling to races such as V8supercars in Australia or AMLS/World Challenge next week in Sebring... then yeah. That takes more time. But we are flexible.

I will probably just put something on craigslist and see what we get.

The first SCCA ProSolo ChaseCam Challenge was this weekend and overall winner was from San Diego, Leslie Cohen. Second place was to semi-local Michael Palero. I think it all worked out quite well.

ChaseCam would like to welcome our newest sponsored drivers.

Randy Pobst. Randy is driving in Koni Challenge series for Grand Am and also for K-Pax Porsche in SPEED World Challenge GT.

Ryan Buetzer. Ryan will be driving a VW diesel Jetta in the VW TDi cup. Ryan recently tested for a ride in the series and did quite well and we look forward to our working together this year.

Randy and Ryan join Jeff Alternburg and Robb Holland as sponsored ChaseCam drivers.

ChaseCam will be present at Long Beach Grand Prix and also VIR this month to support the series, teams, and our drivers.

RandyC

ChaseCam implemented their "no touch" recording system at the Long Beach Grand Prix for SPEED World Challenge and it was a huge success.

The PDR100 now turns on automatically when the car is powered up. The unit will wait in a paused mode until it passes a GForce trigger point (user settable). In the case of the GT cars, we set this at 0.13Gs. This means the car is rolling.

This does not even require GForce calibration as we are looking for a GForce difference.

The PDR100 starts recording video as soon as the car is moving and when the car is stopped, the PDR100 stops recording after 60 seconds (this can be adjusted by the user). When the car is powered off, the PDR100 will (if recording) stop recording, close the video file, and shut down gracefully in 5 seconds, turning off.

All of this happens with zero human interaction. No drivers or teams or series staff need to push anything.

We installed this on 28 SPEED World Challenge GT cars for the Long Beach Grand Prix for the practice, qualifying, and race and it worked very well including capturing high quality footage of Tommy Archer's major crash into the wall during practice.

Next up, ChaseCam travels to VIR this week to install the "No Touch" recording system into the SPEED World Challenge Touring Cars.

Chris

For SPEED World Challenge, all teams copy off their videos and then give the CF Cards to SCCA for review. They have 30 minutes to do this from the end of the session.

SCCA has already accumulated some pretty cool video, such as in car with Tommy Archer when he crashed at Long Beach, but they will not release it.

I too have known Mark for many years and respect him and his opinions, even when they differ from mine. Hopefully, aside from the issue at hand, that thread has been an example of strong, yet civil, disagreement.

But back to real business... just how long is that driveway, Randy? ;)

New website. Well it will be new for most people, a few may still pull up the old site for a day or two.

We are going to add more features to ChaseCam. A video upload and sharing thing. Better community support.

You can see the start of an idea now if you click on the buttons that show sky, dirt, asphalt, etc. Eventually clicking those will pull up custom content designed for your sport. We think that will be cool.

A little background on this for non Vette guys. A c6 vette driver hit a 6x6 during the 5/08 Bowling Green, KY (where Vettes are now born) Cruise In. He had a failure of the upper mount. A lot of speculation followed that coil over shocks put "dangerous" amounts of stress on the upper shock mount.

LG stepped up to the plate (for all the coil over sellers & mfg's) with this test.

Pretty interesting stuff, BTW the coil over involved in the BG incident was not an LG to my knowledge.

:)

FOUL!
In his test, the vehicle is going maybe 30 mph whereas in the racing incident they were likely going well over 100. Since energy goes as velocity squared there is over an order of magnitude difference in energy dissipation required between these 2 cases.

I definitely had not read the Corvetteforum thread (of 450) nor do I have any intention to do so.
I was going off the video from Randy's post (#55) just before mine. They showed a (very) quick clip of the 6x6 on a road with a bunch of cars on it and I focused on the 6x6 and didn't even notice the the cars going the opposite way... so I thought it was a road race course... OOOPS.

I watched the Pfadt video also... and from my point of view, it is a bit hilarious how all this controversy about the coil overs, motivated two companies to use video to prove a point. And both are customers of ChaseCam and you can see our products in both videos. :)

I am not sure who the winner is between LG and Pfadt, but I think it is ChaseCam....the video system of choice for customers who intentionally run over large blocks of wood! (tm)

To be part of the Tonight Show means you do a deal with NBC. We did a deal with Jay Leno and Big Dog Garage, not NBC. So this means an endorsement by Jay, we will be working with the garage (including access). We get a film on the Big Dog Garage site.

We are also part of a film they shot for getting the 1955 Jaguar ready for Monterey and that film is going to be shopped to the networks, but no guarantees.

Just got back from almost a full week in Monterey at the historics. Very cool stuff. We spent most of the time in the jaylenosgarage / BigDogGarage racing team trailer. We placed 5 video systems on the car: Rear Bumper, Front Bumper, Engine Hood, Driver/Cockpit, and Helmet. Every one was set to automatically come on and then record based on GForce trigger and we got EVERY single video without anyone messing with it. Worked perfectly.

NBC guys now have the footage (and so do we) :). The car ran great too. We were able to spend the day with various cool people including Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson.... and see some cool cars and get up close and personal with the cars, like inside the Toyota IMSA car that Fangio drove?? (we had ChaseCams on it), or next to the Lotus John Player Special car with Mario driving it.

The real deal, the 98 car. They also had the celica and a 2000gt out on the track. Driver almost lost it in the corkescrew in the 2000.

At one race CBS (I think) installed an "In Car Camera". They mounted the camera to the roll cage. What no one thought about was the engine was a semi-stressed member of the car. The cage is connected to the engine. The video was great until 'bout 6000 rpms. Then the camera vibrated like hell. We didn't get much air time.

Seeing Mike’s kart videos, I don’t think the Chase Cam would have the same problems.

I'm a Toyota 2000 fan.

My 1:43 models; the Jordan car is autographed. I forgot to take the Patrick version to the Riverside International Automotive Museum when the Fab 50s visited earlier this year. The photo there includes Davey Jordan, an unidentified appreciator, and Scooter Patrick.

Video to follow.

It is an awesome track and an awesome experience. I hope to do it again, but if I don't make it out again, I can cross it now off my bucket list. :)

It was an odd experience to ride along at over 100mph in the corners, feeling the car slipping a bit, and looking at the walls and trees AND HAVE NO HELMETS ON.

Funny, Randall and I compared it to how we do autocross. There was no tech inspection. No safety anything. We had loose stuff in the car. No helmets. Just pay your money and drive.

By the way. Amsterdam was very cool too. We spent some time in Germany and then The Netherlands. Van Gogh museum, Ann Frank House, Carre' Theater, Redlight District, coffee (smoking) shops, partying, canals. Interesting place.

I always thought it sounded like a great place to go play, but recently I read an article where Jackie Stewart described it as "green hell" and (if you have a hot enough car) you get airborne at a few places and can bottom out the suspension. Sounds a bit hairier than I used to think.

Any more comments on your experience?

RandyC
11-19-2008, 08:31 AM
I think that is one of the things that makes it interesting and yet very dangerous. You have all kinds of different elements to deal with. Blind corners. Blind crests at over 100mph where you have to know what happens on the other side. Banked turns. Major elevation changes that even have different weather as you change altitude.

One thing I learned is that unlike a track like Buttonwillow or Willow Springs, you have to really work on developing a comfort level and familiarity with the Ring and since it is so long a track with the varied elements, it will take more runs to get there. That also makes the track more interesting and if I lived near enough, I would do this track much more often.

The track is also less forgiving. I read that there is a lot of crashes on the track, perhaps one serious one each day. This even affected our company. On Wednesday, our UK employee Ollie that was working the trade show for us had to leave and missed the rest of the show leaving only our UK rep Pat and Randall and I to work it. Ollie's brother was in a Lambo that left the track at Nurburgring at 120mph, causing a fracture of the spine requiring surgery.

I was in Germany a few years ago and wanted to visit the Nurburgring but the weather was icy so it seemed not worth the drive. It sure would be a memorable experience.

All I hear these days is Nurburgring, Nurburgring, Nurburgring. I get the sense there is a traffic jam of developmental engineers, tourists, race drivers seeking new records, locals and automotive press on it. Are there any other publicly accessible road courses in Europe? I might be more inclined to seek out a lesser-known track.

All I hear these days is Nurburgring, Nurburgring, Nurburgring. I get the sense there is a traffic jam of developmental engineers, tourists, race drivers seeking new records, locals and automotive press on it.

Yes, yes, and yes.

Halfway through my lap in the Elise I get passed at triple digits by 2 caged race cars, while all three of us are approaching 3 VW Golfs driving inline at ~50mph. I pass the VWs on the _outside_ of a corner only to have a GTR on my bumper, who passes me after I fall in front of the VWs. The speed differential is scary, and cars come into your mirrors quickly and frequently.

If anyone is going, drive it on Xbox about 30 times before you go. The video games do a great job of track layout, though you never get the full effect of the elevation change until you're there, it's incredible. There are more blind corners on the ring than there are total corners on most tracks, and a lot of them are at triple digit speeds. I consider myself pretty comfortable behind the wheel and it was outright scary because I didn't have the track memorized.

I think there were two drops where you could get airborne in a high-powered car. One was right above a big brake zone--I was told to brake "before" the drop.

It was awesome. Not sure I'd do it again without a cage and some safety gear. That said, it's almost refreshing to not have the experienced lawyered up to the teeth. There was a slight feeling of simple survival out there--it's an absolute free-for-all. You could never duplicate that in the US.

Latest-

We supplied the video equipment to the winner of the recent Baja 1000. Yay.

We are working on a deal with a high end, well known television car show. Looks very promising. Can't say anything else right now. Should be cool though.

:) :) :)

A very cool new product is due to be released on February 1st, it has ties from the local car guys scene. Specially if you are into Miatas. It is very cool and we are all excited about this product and it's potential for growth and what we will be able to do in the future.

HD is still in work, but back burnered a little bit while we come out with some other products.

One unfortunate part of this. I need to fly out and be at Sebring. I am supposed to be in the announcers booth for SPEED TV. The last race for World Challenge ends at 6:00pm Friday. The track is two hours from Orlando airport. No flights leave after 8:00pm.

Next flight is 5:30am. And arrives in San Diego at 10:31am. Get a cab home, get changed. Be at Qualcomm by noon. Hope my run group for the tour is scheduled to run late.

Argh

A lot has been happening. If you watched racing this last week on TV, you saw ChaseCam in various places.

SCCA Speed World Challenge from Long Beach and New Jersey. We supply the video for SPEED.

TORC off road truck racing from Texas Motor Speedway. We supplied most of the in-car and on-car footage and will be doing more with TORC in the future.

Formula 1. If you saw Inside Grand Prix this last week, you saw ChaseCams on the Redbull Racing cars, including a video with GForce graphics from us.

Koni Challenge. You saw ChaseCam cars on the track.

Monster Trucks. We supply the systems for the video from Gravedigger.

ChaseCam recently hired on Kim Wright, BMW club autocrosser. She will be helping around the office and has been traveling to racing events doing camera installs.

We have also had Katy Nichols helping us out and traveling to away races including Long Beach Grand Prix and New Jersey. Katy has been a great help to ChaseCam.

Randall Noll has recently had twins and cut back on his autocrossing, but still manages to travel to support TORC, most recently at Texas Motor Speedway.

Kelly Chase travelled to Laguna Seca to support the Grand Am and MX-5 Cup series.

I (and Kim) just got back from Mosport in Canada where it was freezing cold.

Our involvement with the TORC racing series has increased and we are now the official provider and installer and operator for all in car and on car footage for the ESPN showings for TORC.

We are getting excellent stuff. With our cameras being placed ON the dirt track, at the corners, on the trucks (inside and out).

Check out the video on the front page

Note all the video shots including our cameras getting run over and ripped off a truck. And there are cute umbrella girls. We did not put cameras on the girls.

Another piece of the puzzle...

Today we announce the availability of the ChaseCam Data Module. This small module plugs into the back of the PDR Recorder and accepts rpm and GPS data...and combines it with the 3 axis GForce data. You don't have to do anything! It is totally automatic.

All data (as well as potentially external data from some other data acquisition system) gets blended into the video file on the card. Automatically synced up. You don't need to do anything.

With our auto-on function and auto record function, the file is automatically created. You don't need to do anything. No need to trim files, since it starts when you press the accelerator at the start line!

Copy the file to your computer and open DashWare. The data file is automatically sensed and automatically extracted. You don't need to do anything.

DashWare will allow data analysis and the ability to use custom gauges on your video. Add your logos. Your pictures! ANYTHING. Then with a single button, output your video to DVD or Youtube or whatever. AUTOMATICALLY.

As simple as it can be with this much flexibility and power at your fingertips.

We remain the global market leader.

ChaseCam announces our new Data Module. Now you can pull in GPS, RPM, and more to the video. Automatically synced up. Create track maps, do analysis, show speed, and more. All automatically.

http://www.chasecam.com/

http://www.chasecam.com/files/images/datamodule_150h.jpg

Turn your PDR into a Data Acquisition System.

Our customers asked, and here it is. ChaseCam introduces the DM10 Data Module. This plug and play solution will turn ANY PDR into a synchronized data and video acquisition system. That's right, with our new Data Module your EXISTING PDR can capture GPS data, accelerometer data, vehicle sensors, and even OBD2* data. Everything you need to do in-depth analysis, driver coaching, and extensive gauge overlays is recorded to the same memory card as your video, pre-synchronized and ready for immediate analysis.

A revolutionary tool, the ChaseCam Data Module combines 10Hz GPS tracking, onboard accelerometer, direct vehicle sensor inputs, and OBD2 data and sends it to the PDR where it is recorded along with the ChaseCam video file.

Using DashWare, the video and data are both extracted from the card, already synched and ready for analysis and editing. Rather than simply burning static gauges to your video, ChaseCam allows you to keep a clean copy of the video AND use an unlimited amount of gauges, graphics, logos and text to create rich, custom data overlays.

http://www.chasecam.com/files/images/PrimetimeElanOverlay_500w.jpg

DashWare's new analysis feature gives you the ability to compare data from lap to lap, session to session, and even car to car. With full graphing, adjustable scaling, and video tracking, you can watch the video and the data move together. DashWare allows you to compare multiple data sets from both ChaseCam data and others, side by side.

http://www.chasecam.com/files/images/DashWareAnalysis_600w.jpg

Data Module Specs:
10Hz GPS
3-axis accelerometer (in PDR)
Direct RPM input
Direct throttle position (or other 0-5v) input
OBD2 enabled (with optional cable)

Data Module Kit Includes:
DM10 Data Module
RJ45 connection to PDR
GPS antenna
Mounting hardware
DashWare 1.1 with Analysis

Options:
Mounting bracket to attach to PDR mount
OBD2 cable

Awesome, Randy! Now I really am sorry I didn't go to SEMA!

The article says that the DIVA (only to be used by "Nationals-types"?:D) can take up to 4 vid. inputs - does that mean that in addition to the DIVA combining the PDR w/the just released DM10, it also incorporates a "super" version of the S.S.S.1000 (inside joke. Really mean the S.S.1000)?

Hey all, we are moving! Yay.. to bigger and better office space.

Some of you know that our offices have been in La Mesa for 3 years, but not any more. As of this week we are in the Scripps Ranch/Miramar area. Today was our first day we conducted business in the new facility (sort of, a business to business meeting). We should be fully moved in by Superbowl.

The landlord agreed to some improvements in the place for us so we were waiting for the construction to be complete. In the meantime, we had some water issues from the rain in our old building, so we started moving earlier.

Here are some pics of the new place.

We are leasing and I did not see any covenants against auto work, so I am assuming I can work on my own cars there. Hey Randy,
Was just BS'ing with my dad about the Hero cam vs. yours, and we found out that Hero is releasing an HD unit that looks pretty impressive. Anything coming down the pipes?

RandyC
02-04-2010, 01:18 PM
Hero (gopro) already released their HD cam. Seems like a nice unit for the price. Video quality looks good too.

I wish we could have released our HD version, we were working on it. But it costs a lot to develop a new system, way into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. And certain things have happened in the last year to make that not doable. Until now. So we will be coming out with something, but it is delayed a lot.

In the meantime, we have turned our focus to more features, and more data. To that extent, we are in a different market than companies like gopro. They offer a video recorder. You have to turn it on. You have to hit record. There is no data. There is no external audio (on the outside of the car the audio will suck). There are very few features.

On the other hand, our units auto turn on... auto start record based on Gforce triggers. We communicate with data acquisition including high end systems. We record GPS, RPM, and sensor data. We create custom videos with custom gauges and overlays. We offer internal batteries or car powered options. We can be remotely triggered or remotely turned on. We can do multiple cameras.

Our latest unit will have 4 cameras into one and offer a full data integration and fully synced with the video. CAN bus, OBD, and more....

And look for a new product release in two weeks or less. We are also working on some cool stuff we can't talk about yet. But it is cool. One thing will blow the socks off the autocrosser's needs. If they are serious about getting faster.

And HD is coming... but not a featureless system like the others on the market.
