Hi guys, I moved to San Diego about 4 months ago and I've been wanting to go to the track, but they're all far. So I have been looking at auto-x and Im very interested, I have a 350z and I have been asking in our forum about it, but is there anything you guys can tell me to get started?
Where can I register to scca (the website link doesnt work)?
thanks.
Also, my car is completely stock, excempt for front slotted rotors and drop in air filter, and I was reading on a book I bought that slotted rotors are not permited on stock class, would I be on modified?

Champ registration is all day of. Just show up with plenty of time, register, sign up for work, tech and you're ready to go.
The rotors bump you out of stock. Next step for you is BSP. If you find you like the sport and want to be more competitive you can swap the rotors back to stock, or spend lots of $$ and build a serious BSP car.
Day of, you'll need to by a Run Card (an annual licence to Solo in San Diego) before registering.
Flyer for the next event is here:

To add to that.... come out Sunday the 7th of December. Come out before 10:0am (since you run in the afternoon). Use the time to register, get the card, get your car inspected. Have all of the done before they break for lunch. At lunch, walk the course with the novice instructor.
Ask for an instructor to ride with you.
Have fun!

Here's some blunt advice. It doesn't matter what class you 'qualify' for, as a newbie your going to get you butt kicked for a few months. 90% driver, 10% car.

come out Sunday the 7th of December.
Have fun!
The NINTH of Dec.
Sunday, Dec. 9!
However, the 'Have fun' part is correct.
It's without a doubt the most important rule in auto-cross.
Ask for Warren at registration when you come out.

Yeah, what he said :)
- some people show up and think they will be great
- some people think they will stink
- they all stink at first, so don't sweat it when you do too
But as opposed to what some of the other comments were....
1) I suggest coming on Sunday the 9th (oh, I see Nalbar beat me to it)
2) Come earlier (as everyone knows I am the king of early  ).
- walk the course in the morning a few times & look for tricky spots and concentrate on those
- you should even be able to find someone who will talk you through it and give you some pointers (or gates... yuk yuk)
- take the morning novice walk (usually starts ~8:40-ish)
- then when the running starts (~9:00), do all the paperwork stuff BUT DON'T let someone "class" your car and tell you that you are running in the first group.
- instead, try to find a class you can run in after lunch and if that is when your best/true class is, then great; otherwise, it doesn't really matter.
- get your car safety inspected at "tech"
3) Walk the course again at the lunch break and take the lunch time novice walk again if you can.
You want a later class because instructors can't help you out until they have run... i.e. after the 1st group. Also, the more you can learn and the less you have to scramble, the more fun you should have and hopefully that is why you are doing this :)

You might come out Saturday to the practice & meet some people & see how a practice works. Bring your helmet. I'm #47 (Blue Z06). Look me up & get a ride. I'm sure some others will give rides also.

Some of us still stink after 3 years of driving! :D

As fun as it is taking rides with people, and I know I wouldn't want to pass up a ride in a vette, I've heard that taking rides withsomeone before you drive (even though it's a day before) isn't the best thing. This is because the novice will tend to try too hard once he/she see's how you work the course on your run and will not learn as much and fail to have as much fun. They will drive beyond their own personal limits, potentially becoming dangerous. I don't know, just a thought. Although, I'm not one to correct someone for driving beyond their limits!

The 9th is not when rides were offered. They were offered on the 8th, at a practice. It is MUCH easier to get rides at practices because at champ (the 9th) events a person is not allowed to give rides during their 'points' runs.
That said, I will boil every single long winded post above to one sentence;
"Come to ANY event, ask for Warren."

What Warren said,
I'll be there Sat the 8th, next day (Sunday the 9th) you could only get rides AFTER a driver has done his/her competition runs (Fun runs or x runs - you will learn what they are later).

As for Cullen's comment, maybe true for a novice, maybe not. I take as many rides as I can both teaching & learning.
When I first started (2004 maybe?) I was pretty much "self taught" & slow. I took a local "school" & with the help of Steve S. & others learned a lot of techniques that are not obvious to the beginner. Talking about techniques & the course after the run is very helpful.
If you can get it into your head, to not overdrive your limits & your cars (setup) limits then take the ride. If you are likely to be so "pumped up" that you have to go out & "beat" the instructor then Cullen is right, you'll take out a lot of cones, get lost, spin, or just tear up your tires. You have to decide.
