How strict are the sound regulations here in SD? I plan on getting an exhaust for my car but it will be very loud at redline even with the silencer in place. Should I just not get it since it may disqualify me? What interests me is that certain cars stock are very loud and I think they are aloud to run. Thanks alot guys and hope to see you at the races

The sound regs are very strict, but unless you remove the cat and go with an aftermarket header, you'd be hard pressed to push the dB's that far in a civic.

I've tried three different exhausts on my car (high rev 4 cyl. as well) and all of them have been over 93db at more than one event (usually practices)... stock cat and exhaust manifold in place. YMMV

So sean should I stay stock?? I plan on getting the Skunk2 70mm Catback but from what I heard way past 93 even with silencer. Thanks guys

Sound readings are not standard. If an exhaust is rated at 100db by the mfg, you can't really correlate that to a reading on course using our rules. If there's a good used market for the exhaust you want to try, I'd say buy one used and see what happens. There's really no risk as you can sell it again if it is too loud.

I dunno, civics are pretty loud....

not sure how if u can do this on the new ones, but a certain nationally competitive civic si's (91) of ambiguous color :p ran detaching the rear part of the exhaust (axleback) OFF and kicked arse constantly, and was loud, but very rarely did it actually go over the dB limit....

try this before u spend the $$, just takes a little elbow grease and a jack...:)

Hmm I don't know, i have the current K20 engine out and the car makes 89 Dbs stock at redline. What exactly is the DB limit? And from how far do they measure? My friend already has the exhaust maybe I can measure it myself

you guys are kidding right. I run a header and a cat back on my 4 banger and have never gotten a warning for 91 db. I have worked the sound meter a few times and most cars barely get into the high 80s let alone low 90s.

Buy what you want. I highly doubt you are going to blow the sound meter with a cat back.

You get warnings in SD at 91db.... which is louder than you think.

Yeah but you have a much shorter exhaust system than he (she?) would right?

I think you'll be fine. Like Anthony said, you'd be surprised at how loud 93 db is.

Thanks guys, here is a vid of the same car with the same exhaust. http://youtube.com/watch?v=yFgjW6YT-sc

I can peg 93 with just induction noise on an otherwise stock Elise. I have tried a number of aftermarket exhausts using stock headers and cats and all were over 93db. Even now my car can't run legally at the Q.

This is disheartening since the elise has a very similar engine, infact mine has a little bit more power. With my car redline at 8000 rpm im not really sure if my car will be black flagged or not

Yep. Oh well. I am looking into ways to get the car quieter and I think a normal car, it should be doable. But mine is not as normal anymore so the job has become quite harder.

No cat. Supercharger. Special intake. Custom header. Etc.
(My previous sound problems were on a stock car with an after market CAI, or with just the Toyota snorkel removed from the airbox, or with only an aftermarket exhaust)

Guys thanks alot, I think im going to buy one and sell it if it gets me DQed. Its a pretty popular exhaust.

After a sound violation, you get a warning and are allowed to go out again in you make a visible change which should quiet the car.

Try a Supertrapp exhaust tip. If you get a sound warning, put on the supertrapp with 8 plates. If you're still loud, take out some plates and try again.

If induction noise is a problem, try using some of the heat shield padding to provide some insulation.

You will not even come close. Like Chris said the Elise is a totally diffrent setup. The civic with just a cat back probably has 2 more cats left. A lot more piping in general then the mid engine Elise. It is like comparing apples to oranges.

Have you autox'd before? If not, chances are you will become very interested in improving your speed during and after the first event more than any other time in the future of you persuing this hobby. You will become infatuated on learning to go faster your first day.

What I mean is, perhaps you should save the money, and spend it on something that will be more beneficial to the performance of your car. You will take on a different mindset once you start autoxing more and will only buy things for it that really make sense. You will be amazed at how many people are talking about tires, tires and tires wherever you go around the pits and grid. There is so much to these cars, that buying something that you are not certain on improving your car is not worth it. Improve yourself first; it's much cheaper. :)
