So the del sol quit on me on the way home from the event. It seems I may have spun a rod bearing unfortunately. :(:( Thanks mike for stopping and helping me out.
Sorry I missed Dinner Andrew and Chris I'll have to catch up with you guys next time.
Hopefully i'll be at the october event in something but we will have to see.

hey
we saw your car on the freeway (chris and I) we were going to turn around and stop but it looked like the tow truck was ready to get your car up and figured you'd be gone by the time we went back
You didn't miss much. Well, Chris and I got drunk and did some funny things but that isn't all that spectacular :D
John, stop beating around the bush. Come to the dark side and join us.........Muahahahah! Men will love you for being able to make them scream with just sticky tires and women will love you for having such a "cute" car. See, win-win. Doesn't get any better than that.

What the hell are you talking about Andrew?
Do you think John really wants that?
BTW, sorry to hear that about your motor man. Did you have too much or little oil in it by any chance? Maybe it's fate man.

Spun bearings are fixed easily enough ;) Planning on rebuilding, getting a new motor, or junking it all together?

plans... hmmm good question. I m torn in every direction right now on what to do. Mainly I think i will be doing a swap to a B16 and coming back to STS2 ( yes, I know you guys want me to get a miata), cause with that motor my car will be much more competitive or I can try to go with a B18 and run SM2. but I don't think the B18 is going to make enough HP to justify going to SM2. I m not even 100% sure it would be legal in SM2.

Hp doesn't win autox's :) You could can make tons of power from an NA 1.8, at least enough to be fast in the straights.

Oh I realize the HP isn't the biggest issue (lesly's civic is a great example) but it will still help with corner exit accel a little.

I know the money you spend is yours, but trust me on this one John.
I had a Honda which I loved very much, and it wasn't anywhere as nice as yours. I loved the vtec kicking in, the braking and I thought it was the sportiest thing I could ever enjoy. I drove Andrews old Miata once and I fell in love. The car did everything I wanted it to do, and I was laughing inside my helmet so much, I couldn't concentrate on driving the course! I'm sure you felt the same way on sunday. It is a hard pill to swallow, the way you think people will percieve you in one, but you'll learn not to give a eff, and just run people off the road everyday like I have to.
Bottom line is, maybe a change in car configuration will be good for your driving and this car is famous for teaching people the right way to drive (ever wonder why Mazda is focusing their driver development ladder starting from the Spec Miata series?).
Those who can attest to this, please support my point! John is one of the great new young drivers for our sport, and we need to raise them properly! Viva SDR! :D

Looks like we both had rough rides home... My car stopped idling right after about the 10th run. Found out i melted the line that went to my external wastegate (06 STi) so i was boosting 25+psi on a setup set to 20psi. Probably blew a ring land. Still runs but i need to stay on the gas a bit for it not to die. Annoying but at least im learning to brake with my left foot. Gonna do a compression check and then a leakdown test soon...
Hope its not what i fear
John dude, coming from a Civic background myself, Chris and I have been there man. We know how it feels to be attached to your baby. And if you didn't care about being pro, I would just leave you alone and let you go along your merrily little way; for all I care you could swap in a V8 and start to drag race!
HOWEVER, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the not case!
It's like a romantic relationship; with time the people and the relationship grows. I don't doubt the fact that you're maturing but why don't you give yourself and your overall relationship with cars a chance to grow and mature as well? First loves are nice and picture-perfect but when it doesn't work out and there's better for you down the road, you just got to MAN UP and move on.
The transition is different but with every new thing, you have to give it a shot. Chris and I both have done it and I swear that there is not a single spec of regret within our racing souls.
Simply put, just think long term. What car will benefit you the most as far as putting you in the right spot to learn RIGHT now and IN THE NEAR FUTURE? I'm a college student on a budget so if I can minimize the cost and time to become pro, I will take every shortcut possible.
And if that fails, remind yourself how SH**TY it feels to be 2-3 seconds behind in STS2 every event when you know with the right car your driving skill can possibly give you a victory.
A cup of hot chocolate, a warm blanket, and a comfortable chair with some deep thought should bring you to the light man. And if your girlfriend gets jealous you're not sharing your thoughts, tell her to shoo shoo because you need your MAKING-BIG-DECISIONS-ALONE-BUT-I-WILL-TELL-YOU-LATER-SWEETY-TIME!

Andrew I think you are scaring him away with the strange emotional powers your car is emitting on you. I mean, I got a miata too but I didn't need ice cream and candles before I decided to buy a miata.
Well sorry Jerry, if I was TOO "deep" for you. ;)

Horsepower doesn't do that. Torque does. :)

A Miata's torque will easily pull you out of corners

haha thanks guys, well it looks like I am keeping the del sol and fixing it...... and buying a miata :) lol so i am working on finding one right now and i have found a few deccent ones i need to start looking at. so watch out chris and andrew I m going to chase you guys down.lol
Buying a Miata has A LOT to do with patience. I have found that the more patient and less of a rush you are in, the better the deal you will get. A few new ones or so pop up every week or two. Don't bother driving to LA like I did to look for one, there's plenty around San Diego that will be lucky enough to be adopted by you.
I don't want to celebrate just yet so I'll just leave it at: "I'll believe it when I see it." = )
Happy searching mate!

Ya I m not going to rush into something. I have been doing some research and I went to Steve's today to get some tips and things to look for on the miata's since I only know a lot about Honda.

Miata either you love it or you hate it.
No torque, can barely fit a full set golf bag, cramped interior.
I sure miss mine and I am saving to get another one.

Just have to convert the Miata to the awesome power of the B6T!!!!!!! (Or BPT depending on the year of course). That'll solve ALL your torque problems. While you're at it, drop in AWD, upgrade the turbo and computer, through on a roof and a backseat.... wait thats my GTX. ;)

Easier just to add a supercharger to the BP motor than put in the B6T :D

Well the BPT wouldn't be too bad, but I guess you still need to redo the wiring harness.
Hey John, check the PMs lately?

Worried about torque?
Get a 99-00 and all your problems are solved :D
Just ask Cullen :)
And then replace all the bodywork and do a pop-up headlight conversion then run STS2

LOL
I can only imagine how fast a NB would be in STS2. Maybe if they let it run with no springs that would be fair.

Be my guest, pull out those springs next practice day and let's see what types of times you run, then let's revisit this topic. While you're at it, you might as well run without coolant or oil or,... :p :p :p
Why don't you guys run IS2?

Why do you challenge me at a practice? Scared? Let's do this on a champ day.
haha. no, that did sound funny what I wrote though. How about run with 10psi in the tires. Because of Jerry's strict car maintenance philosophy, he probably runs around with that on the street already.
I guess my joke wasn't understood. Anywho, bad joke anyways. Seriously, why don't you prep your car and come to STS2?

I really am serious and I know there's been talk about it. Just trying to get him over the edge. STS2 is a great class just past its infancy and we need more people for it to grow. I also wish we had a few CRX's also.

Ditto about the CRX. It would do really well IMO; less weight and more power!
John, it would be great to keep you in STS2, honda or mazda. I've got an open seat at the next event if you are interested.

I am driving a very well prepared car in STS2 next season. Mr. Heinitz has my thanks.

But now that you're on the potential winners list, it will be even better. Hopefull John can get his car prepared soon, and I think Andrew wants to compete on a regular basis too. Thanks for the high hopes, but won't you be competing against me??? :)

Doing well last event came out of nowhere and was obviously circumstances and pure luck, plain and simple. It won't happen again. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to place high but I'd much rather learn and have fun. I came to autocross to learn to drive so I don't kill myself at a HPDE. I'm sticking around because of the friendly people.
