Nope. As the flyer says, registration and tech are open from 7:30 - noon. Cost is $35 or $25 if you're an SCCA member.

Went to the practice today and it was great watching everyone run. I only stayed an hour, but I could see there are some good drivers out there. The go-kart was crazy on the track. I would like to attend tomorrow, so I have a couple of questions:
1) Are there helmets to rent there?
2) How many runs will we be able to get?
3) Will there be instructors for novices?
4) Total for a new member is $35(entry fee)+$30(Solo II card), correct?
5) Do I need to bring tape for marking my car?
Anything else a noob needs to know? Thanks.
nalbar
01-28-2006, 05:29 PM
1. yes, there are LOANER helmets, no charge, you leave your drivers license.
2. 3 runs, maybe 4 if a low turnout
3. yes, but sometimes its better if you run later in the day
4. i think they lowered the price for the soloII card, but i could be wrong.
5. PLEASE do the course workers a favor and buy the printed numbers the region sells for a dollar. its a freaking dollar for gods sake! you probably have four quarters in your ash tray. those GD taped numbers drive me nuts!
IT'S ONLY A FREAKING BUCK!!

btw, don't try to win your first time out.
concentrate on two things;
1. don't get lost on course while driving
2. don't get killed while working
if you do both those things your first time you have had a successful event.

earlier the better. even if you run the afternoon. early. if you run in the morning you should be there by 7:30. walk the course AT LEAST twice! this course all novices should walk it THREE times, but i will settle for twice.
if you run in the afternoon get there early in the morning, walk the course and then walk it AGAIN at the lunch break.
a trick; at the 'Q' it is possible to walk completely AROUND the parking lot staying behind the concrete barriers or fences, never actually going on the parking lot. you can check out the whole course while people are running by doing this. worried about a 'tricky' spot? walk AROUND the lot, until you get a view of that area. i have even gone up on friers road and sat in the bushes to pass the time.
yes, i ran today (a pretty safe statement considering i have missed one champ and one practice in three years). tallest car out there, a white maytag washing machine on wheels, #75.
anything i can do to help, ask. i work two, run three. i'll probably do 'x' runs in the afternoon. as randy says, i have no life.

There *should* be a separate novice meeting before the runs at 9:00am. In any case, it is not mandatory that you attend the meeting as far as I know.

I just looked on the scca website for car classes and it seems the a G35 Coupe is in stock F class. Would that make it FSP for me or does it change in the Street Prepared section?
Also, my first time out do I run with a instructor or just by myself? After going today and looking at the cones, it seems like you could get lost easily because some of the turns aren't well defined.

Letters in "Stock" don't corespond to letters in "Street Prepared".
Look under the "Street Prepared" listings and you'll see your car or at least the very similar 350Z.

Ok, I found it. E Street Prepared. It just says G35, not appended with coupe or sedan. The 350Z is B Street Prepared. The ESP class is made mostly of mid-size sedans and muscle cars though.

Your car is also legal in SM2 or SU, if you would rather run later in the afternoon. These classes run 5th.
I'll be running my G35 Sedan in D-Stock in the 4th group.

That sounds right, I recall now that they recently changed it. The resoning given to seperate the 350Z and the G35 was shakey though.

Hmm...the scca website has conflicting info. On the Street Prepared listings, it lists the G35 Coupe as BSP. In the Main Rules.pdf file, it has G35(no coupe or sedan specified) for the E Street Prepared. So, I'm not really sure where I belong for now.
Regardless, I went today and ran with the BSP group. It was a blast and I plan on doing it again soon. One thing I learned, is that my aftermarket springs are way too soft for auto-x since they are progressive springs. My car was understeering badly and I had the feather the throttle(to let the back out) to make a clean turn. I will soon be ordering some 350Z Tein linear springs an Tokico D-Spec shocks, so hopefully I can have a neutral car next time around.
Btw, it was great meeting Scott. He was really helpful. He got first place too in his class....although he was the only one in his class, lol. Also saw Randy's Elise pulling off some great times.

Paul,
These are great! Thanks for taking some photos of the "electric" car as everyone says. IT'S A HYBRID!:)
How would some one go about purchasing one of your photos?
Thanks,

Unfortunately I didn't get down to the stadium until 10 or so, =\ so I don't think I have any 1st run group shots today. I had to leave at lunch as well. Maybe next time :D

all-
here is a crappy GPS data collection output of saturdays run.
The GPS unit I used is a garmin forerunner 201- its designed for 5-10mph, so the resolution and sampling rate isn't that good. I wish the car could turn on a dime as the output indicated.
this run was from the starting line through the track and back parking spot.
The background image used was USGS background aerial photo. I know there are better, but the free mapping service I use doesn't have USGS high-res color.

First, thanks SCAT for putting on the event on Sunday. I was able to get some much needed tuning runs in the car.
Trying to get the car set up for the Tour and there is not much time. We put on new Penske shocks, new swaybar and a new alignment with corner weighting done. And I am still trying to get used to these Goodyear tires. Getting some runs in on warm tires is pretty important and also being able to get some course elements where I could focus on the CAR and not the driver, was important too.
When walking the course, I was a little dismayed. But I felt the course drove a lot better than I expected it would. The slalom in 3rd gear in the Elise was fun...and then trying to smoothly brake hard, shift back to second and get through that last slalom cone was not easy.
We only had a problem at the finish with the ABS on the Elise getting confused and at least once, I had no brakes. Which sucks when that happens. I need to figure out how to disable the ABS or otherwise solve this.
Congrats to my codriver for the event, Bill Schenker. He drove a 72.5 clean run, which beat me  and I think finished in 3rd in PAX. That was pretty good considering the car is not really prepped yet for FP (we have not touched the engine..yet). The car seemed to be handling pretty well and we still have more work to do (springs are next).
One thought, I think the very long course might have spread out the course workers a little? I did get quite a few re-runs from issues on course. I don't mind personally... :)
Thanks again SCAT, I had a good time.

Thank you Randy for your feedback. Bill Shenker was all smiles during dinner after the event when talking about the Elise run.
With the many work stations we had set up, I too feel it was a bit thin in some places. This has been noted by our club and steps will be taken in the future to prebvent such an issue happening again.
With that said, I feel the Saturday track was very challenging to any driver, and the Sunday course very much required the ability to LOOK ahead.
I lost to two very skilled autocrossers, Steve Coe and Bill Sanford. Best loss I had in a while.

Scott,
Thank you for the kind words! I didn’t think I could get past Bill. I finally got in clean run, just 4 tenths ahead of Bill. He really made me work for it.
After hearing how bad the course was Saturday, you listened well and made a great course for Sunday. My complements to SCAT.
Oh FYI for the C Stock crowd. Jessie C. is going to be kicking some **s when she gets a little more track time. I had the pleasure of riding with her on Sunday. The girl has no fear at all and is a quick study. Way to go Jesse! Michael you’ve got to be proud!

By the way, the times for Lillie and me (numbers 815 and 518) did not appear on the preliminary results for SS that were posted at lunch time. I assume that we were not entered in the computer in some way (we got points cards that morning) but I thought I'd mention it.

I want to second the compliments on Sunday's course. Good design, flowed well, felt fun and safe everywhere (even with my foot on the ground in third through the downhill slalom). Very, VERY good use of cones. My two normal dislikes with SD courses are (1) too many cones and not enough pointers, and (2) some 50+mph run at the finish with a 'spin-or-win' kink. This course had neither. Well done!

You missed the spin or win kink from Saturday. I think I drifted around that corner a few times (as it was an S curve so tight I was in first before I figured out the trick).

That is probably correct. Seen it before.
For the record to earn points for an annual trophy one must join one of the 5local clubs: DCCSD, SCAT, SCNAX, SDAD, or TART (each has a forum here.) I mention this because a gentleman who made 10 events last year (best 9 of 13 were counted) and expected a trophy was sorely disappointed he was not getting one since he was not a member of a club.

To emphasize, no you didn't. You bought an SDR SoloII card, your car number for the year. It's not a "points" card.

So you need both a points card and solo II card to compete? Where can I get a points card?
RandyC

"Points card" is a Los Angeles thing. We don't have that. We only deal with SCCA cards AND San Diego Solo2 cards. You don't need an SCCA card, it only gets you a discount.
nalbar
01-30-2006, 06:15 PM
Daniel, in order to get points in San Diego you MUST be a member of a club. You are. So you are covered.

When the event results get posted all who registerd as "Novice" will show up in one section. Each driver's best time will be PAXed (this is a handicapping index so you can compare your CS time to that of, say, an ASP car.)
Also, while Novice results are ranked there are no trophies or year end points for the "class." You must compete in the regular classes to get those. But try not to be too intimitated by that, since after 3 events everyone has to get out of Novice.
Welcome aboard!

You only need a solo2 (car number) card. There is no "points card" in San Diego. To accumulate points to year end you need to join a club.
You can win trophys without belonging to a club.

Thanks for the clarification on the points issue. Lillie is a member of SCNAX in LA. Does that make her a member of SCNAX San Diego?
I'm a member of PSCC in LA, and as that doesn't exist in LA I guess I need a club. Not knowing anything about the San Diego clubs I guess I'll join SCNAX. Sport Compact pretty much covers the Elise I think.

Not necessarily, depends on the system. Some of the bendix junk used electric hydroboost motors to give you brake pressure, and if you pull the fuse on those, you loose all assistance. Just ripped one of these systems out of my jeep as I got tired of manual brakes. :)
