Yeah. This one is all new and spiffy. :) Kinda like moving when the house gets cluttered.

Except normally you bring some of your old stuff with you, instead of burning the old place to the ground and living in a brand new, spiffy, empty shell. :)

Since the forum is not tied into any sort of official database, I am the one modifying your user group assignment and I would like to keep it up to date. If you change clubs because your old club sucks and the new one is less sucky, please let me know! Thanks!:p

AWRIGHT none GROUP! Just a few more people and we'll be in first!!!

I think some of us members of Team None don't fully understand the benefits of joining outside of the camaraderie.

I've heard some things about practice days and access to certain information / equipment. I've heard other things about "points" and "championship" and "trophies", but I haven't been able to put 2 and 2 together to get 4 (I keep getting 3 for some reason).

RandyC

That is a good point/question. Why join a club?

Here is the short answer.... this sport exists as a volunteer sport, the clubs put on the events. If you feel like being part of the community that puts on events..in other words..doing your share of the work.. being in a club allows you to do that. On the other hand, some people have no problem just being a paying customer of the region and driving/working their group and being done with it. That should be totally cool too.

To make up for the little bit of extra work that being in a club entails, there are some benefits. The dancing girls and beer just to start. Okay... maybe not the dancing girls. Being in a club allows you to qualify for, and be a part of, the annual points championship. Otherwise you only can trophy at each event. Club members compete in the year long series for a year ending trophy or jacket which is given out at the annual awards banquet.

Being in a club gives you some voting rights as your club is a voting member of the association. If you want your voice heard, it mostly has to come through a club to formally get counted.

Some clubs may give you some priviledges such as reduced entry fees (or free entries) into that club's event. Perhaps automatic access to a practice event that club is putting on. And sometimes there are club only events, or restricted to mostly club members (though this is rare). Some clubs have shirts and hats too. :)

And although the entire membership of the community as a whole is helpful, friendly, etc... being in a club might get you more help since you are "one of them."

And as you mentioned... the whole camaraderie/social/beer&pizza thing.

Okay, so, for us new guys, is there any reason to join one club over another?

Okay, so, for us new guys, is there any reason to join one club over another?
Certainly.

Each club has different requirements and benefits and more. For most things, I will suggest you find out which club fits you and I will refrain from naming which club is better for which thing.

I don't know each club's deal really... but suffice to say that some clubs have participation requirements in terms of making the monthly club meetings or working the club events. Some clubs do not. Some clubs have annual dues. Some do not. Some give discounts to their own events. Some do not. Some have nice looking shirts and hats. Some have yellow ones. (Just kidding SDAD!).

And each club probably has a club personality also that reflects the membership. Some clubs tend to a certain type of car more than others, though that is pretty blurred now. At one point for example, TART had a lot of Corvettes and SDAD had most of the MOD cars. And there is a theory that many years ago, there were people in DCCSD (Datsun Competition Club, SD) that had Datsuns. It might be an advantage to consider a club that has most of the same cars as you, not that people won't help anyway even if you are in a different club.

Each club has their own ways of handling internal voting and membership. Some are more democratic, some reflect a benevolent dictatorship.

Some clubs are more into doing things like they have always been done. Some are into trying new things.

Some clubs have more members that travel to National events. Some have hardly any or none.

Each club has a different social aspect. For one example, DCCSD has a summer weekly volleyball thing they do. SCAT has been known to have bar-b-ques back in the day. Some meet more online or for beer and pizza after events.

Last point is that each club has a certain number of members. That is not a good or bad thing. More members can mean running events is easier (it takes a certain number of members to put on events) and might mean more events each year from the club. Less members might mean you have more of a say in a more intimate club. I don't know the membership numbers, but I believe some clubs are under 20 active members and DCCSD has historically been a large club and now SCNAX has over 70 members. But let me point out that ability to put on a good event is more about the core people so a small club can still do it (like TART)... but it might be a little more effort for everyone involved. There was a point when I was in SCAT back in the early 90s, when we had less than 10 people doing everything. It was not easy.

Perhaps a representative from each club could post a message in the club subforums explaining their requirements and benefits?

Thanks! I wasn't sure how different / separate the clubs really are.

Randy - thanks for taking the time, once again, to post a thoughtful and enteraining guide to clubs for the newbies!

Just so any of you newbies don't get the wrong impression; all my post about Team None above is a JOKE. Cheap sarcasm.
I am really a club member and better for it. Team None is just that - NO benefits, no fun, no championship points, no socials, no comraderie, no nothing... If you are interested in auto-x and cars and people, JOIN A CLUB!
It's very rewarding. Really.:)

Randy, you're dating yourself... the "association" has ceased to exist for a little while now! ;) (How many years has it been?)

(But I guess that dates me too for knowing that, doesn't it?)

RandyC,
Since I am visiting and my Arctic Alaska Region SCCA is not divided into clubs, what shall I do?

By "enter your card number in your user profile" or " your card number" do you want the SCCA member number?

Thanks!

Lets say you want to belong to a club. Will someone pay you to be in their club? JK. So clubs are not about the car you drive? I am a newb. I will be starting this year. I still am not sure of the step by step procedure to get the car rolling on the track. I have looked at the car class definitions and still am not positive, if you mess up in running in your class who is in charge of correcting the mistake? is their somebody that has gone through the inauguration before that can spell it out in simple terms. ie step 1, step 2 etc. as far as I can tell my car would be in the CSP class. it is 2001 audi 1.8L TT quattro. mods are CAI, Speed chip, Bigger Intercooler, OCC. running on street tires. Do I go to the SCCA web site and sign up there or do i go through the local chapter? When you get your card do the secret parking spaces at the mall show up? Thanks to all of you that have input. Hi Paul.

Before you even register for the event, you will have to come to my table to purchase your memberships. I will handle all your worries. You do not need to go to the SCCA site, we do everything at our events. Generally speaking, I recommend you do not purchase your SCCA membership until you actually need it, otherwise you are losing a month or so while you do not run. I will also class your car for you.

If you happen to run in the wrong class, no worries, we will fix it.
